Well I'm about to drink a bottle of Jack as I cannot stop the air leak at the oil pump on my new S25 Super Deluxe. I got fed up and did a pressure test on my other three S25's and they all had the same problem. They leaked as well. WHAT THE #$%^. It baffles me how one can stop this leak so as to do a pressure and vacuum test. Also with air escaping I can't see how the auto oiler would function properly. Like my previous post stated I made new gaskets, tried adding sealant, all to no avail. I'm really confused. Has anyone who has these saw had the same issue? Is this a weakness in these saws and more importantly would this air leak cause a lean issue when running. Better yet how on earth has anyone fixed this leak.

You might try putting up a pic of the saw showing the place where it's leaking..might help us understand what you mean. I have three 25s and have had others and never had a problem like what you're describing. I've had lots of the micros but don't know if that's the same thing, no problems there either.

Bob, your getting me somewhat confused. Your leaking air at the oiler correct?

I know that I have a block off plate made up for when I vac test a 3400 to completly block off the impulse passage on them.

You might have to do the same thing on the S25's. To be honest, I dont think I ever vac tested one of them.

Some folks around here put way too much faith in having to have a vac test hold for hours and hours. A slight drop is no problem on them. Hell a Homelite 330 has a hole drilled under the reed passage on them. There is no way to vac test one of them without plugging that off, but they run fine with a built in vac leak.

Are you still working on the S25D? Are you sure its a manual or auto oiler yet?

Mark, most of the 330s I've come in contact with have a built in vacuum leak in the boot, well, maybe it wasn't built in.
 
Thanks for your reply, I went back and checked my service manual and it does say the impulse line and the fuel line are attached to the carb. I believe I am missing something on the tank vent line. The service manual called for a tank vent cap for the line? Any idea what I can use for that.

Modified Mark gave me a call and straightened me out. He explained that most oilers, esp.S25.
Don't hold pressure that well.So long as you can block off th e impulse hole in the case and keep pressure your okay. This I can do with my finger. Thanks to Mark I can sleep at night now. He was very thoughtful and kind to take the time to call me. Hats off to Mark. Great guy!

I believe ol' Tommy Hall said the Stihl specs require holding the specified vacuum for less than a minute. I don't remember exactly, but I think it was only 20 or 30 seconds. I might be off, but I remember being surprised at how short it was.
 
Got my 4900 running finaly, after a complete tear down, all new gaskets, flipped the rings, new crank seals, the only thing I didn't do was rebuild the carb. After i got it running she seems to smoke a bit, mabe the rings need to reseat?? I didn't fill the b&c oil yet so it can't be sucking it from there, only thing I can think of is a mabe an HS carb kit, my mix is 50:1. This saw has the Tilly HS176A same as the 5200. She sounds mean at idle, almost like a dirt bike engine.

Ya, dirt bike engines, old ones. Can you imagine if the old bultaco or suzuki of yesteryear made saws?

Remember I had the issue with the fuel line because the P.O. drilled it too large and the line wouldn't seal, well I drilled it even larger, used a bigger fuel line as a grommet, then ran the 5/16 line in that, then down sized to 1/8 once in the tank., Worked out great.

The newest addition, got based on it being locked up, found a screw in the crank case, causing the crank bind, have no clue how the screw got there either. This is a very low hour saw, got two bars, the original 12" banana brand new with chain, and like new 16"er. It needed fuel lines and a carb kit. However I didn't have a carb kit, so I put an older WA19 carb on which happens to be a larger venturi carb!!!

Nice job on the 4900. I picked up one sometime back but it was just too corroded up to save, but I got some good parts off of it.

I did pick up the 4900 from ebay this week and it should be here in a few days. I hope its ok, but I have had good luck buying saws with broken recoil ropes. (so far anyway:msp_mellow:)

Why is it that all the 4900 saws I see have the olive drab top cover?

Hummm let me see. I guess its because all 4900's came with that color top covers!!! :laugh:
 
Good looking bunch of saws Dave.:msp_thumbsup: I guess the color of the top cover of the 4900 was just to distinguish it from the 4400 (regular Poulan green) The 5400 (black) 4900 (olive green). But it does look like it was a little shinier when new. LOL Here is a brochure pic from that series. Maybe a little hard to see.

Interesting reading at the lower right corner of that add about Poulan not reccomending chainbrakes! I knew that but thought others would want to see why most of the Poulans didnt have chainbrakes.
 
My 4900 has the olive coloured top but it does not worry me - I like it. I pick up another 4900 next Tuesday and although I have not seen it yet I am betting it has the dull green top too.
I had a eucalypt fall across a fence last night and being Sunday I was in no hurry to clean up so though I could have a retro day. I have three older saws on my bench this week so I wondered if they could fulfill a three saw plan. (There is also a spanking Husky 266 I have just finished but I considered it too new.)
For limbing I used this Poulan XXV deluxe. Man it is a snotty little thing and so easy to use with one hand. Sorry about the bald head.

For the medium stuff I could have grabbed a 3400 or 375 but I have been playing around with a few Partners lately. This one is really an R420T despite having a later model 650 top cover. I am keeping the original alloy top for Sunday best. It has a 65cc closed port jug and cuts as well as a modern saw - considerably faster than my S65 and 650.

I had to block up the butt of the tree so my 8500 seemed just right. I borrowed the bar and chain from the 4900 and was keen to see if it had more grunt than it. Well it was close thing - perhaps I need bigger wood to tell. All I can say is the 4900 and the 8500 both cut with real authority.

Nice pics Al. :msp_thumbsup: Your 3 saw plan from 25 years ago, doesn't look a whole lot different from my 3 saw plan from today! :) Was curious too as to what kind of tree that is your working on. The bark looks a lot like are Sycamore, but probably hard as iron. LOL

Do the make 2 different clutch covers for the poulans 2.3 sxxv's not the micro style saws. I have 2 of these and they both have a metal pc riveted to the top, do they make one that does'nt have this metal pc on top? If so why do the ones with the metal pc on top have it?

Another thing I noticed, if you use the scroll wheel on your mouse you can make the saws rock back and forth.
