Do the make 2 different clutch covers for the poulans 2.3 sxxv's not the micro style saws. I have 2 of these and they both have a metal pc riveted to the top, do they make one that does'nt have this metal pc on top? If so why do the ones with the metal pc on top have it?

John,

I'm not at all sure that I understand everything I know about what you just asked!!!!!:msp_confused::dizzy:

Well, they make at least 2 different clutch covers for the micro saws. Found out the hard way, some won't fit because of a bigger fuel tank on some. The bigger one is squared off in back where the smaller one is angled more.

I'm asking about the 25da saws, mine have a piece of metal riveted on the top of them from factory. Why is this piece of metal on here and do they all have this? Doe's this make any sense to ya now? lol I'm not very good at describing things if ya have not noticed.

I'll bet you have a Power Sharp version. They have the little plate that normally has the Power Sharp button sticking through it. Many people removed the button when they went to a conventional chain. I had a saw where someone riveted a plate where the button was.

I'll bet that's it. The non-PS covers are quite small. The PS covers are much larger, and the PS knob and button stick out the top. I've seen a few that have had a plate riveted over those holes. They did seem to be that way from the factory, as the plate and rivet had the same paint on them as the rest of the cover and saw. Maybe some non-PS saws were built with "stripped" PS covers with a blockoff plate installed. Could be they didn't have enough non-PS type cover castings on hand to complete an order. Who knows...

John,

I know this isn't a S25DA, The ones I have don't have an extra plate on them. This 203 Poulan I have, has a plate on it, that I can't quite figure either. There is no mention of Power Sharp on the saw anywhere. The decal just says Auto oiling & compression release. There doesn't appear to be any thing under the cover, that would suggest it had a PS either. I'm stumped as well..

Gregg,

Any idea on what saw this is? poulan 16'' chainsaw

Bob's(redunshee) guess is pretty good as any. I can't think of a good way to tell the difference, other than measuring the bore. They made a 3400(56cc) & 3800(61cc) in that color combo, green & black. Most 3400's probably would have a 16" bar & 3800's a 18" bar. But who knows how many times that could have been changed over the years. And personal preference.

Gregg,

Nice pics Al. :msp_thumbsup: Your 3 saw plan from 25 years ago, doesn't look a whole lot different from my 3 saw plan from today! :) Was curious too as to what kind of tree that is your working on. The bark looks a lot like are Sycamore, but probably hard as iron. LOL

Never mind...I just reread your post. LOL Eucalyptus.

Gregg,

Gregg,
That tree is some kind of low country euc, not indigenous to this area. Planted in wood rows and as specimen trees for their picturesque, white bark. They have a variety of common names but they are essentially a nuisance as they have a propensity to falling over around here. The timber is OK, burns well and like all eucs, is easy to cut when green but gets pretty hard when dry.
I must think like you as I nearly always grab an old saw these days - it just seems right. I have a another 4900 and 3400 coming next week - probably basket cases but I can't resist. My other problem is I buy a parts saw and then have to resurrect it. Then I have to buy another saw to have some parts on hand and get it going. I never have any parts but I have lots of saws!
I love that 203 - it is a fine looking saw. Never seen one down here and I wonder if they were ever imported. We have millions of old Macs and Homelites but not many Poulans. Lucky for me that they are not collectable here.

Al.

Gregg,

Gregg, every time I see that saw I think to myself that I should have bought it along with the other 2 that came with it lol.

:DLOL Yes, This 203 & the Thirty-O-Six run pretty good. The 3rd saw that was in that bunch was a late model 306 with solid state ign. has given me fits. I thought it might be one that I might actually use once in a while. It will idle, but no transition at all. I'll have to play with it some more....some day. They were all nice looking saws.

Ohh I got a 4000 in those colores too. Regardless of what it is it's worth it to buy.

Thats probably what it is. The ones that I have are factory plates on the cover for sure.

There are 3 different clutch covers for the 25 series saws (not micros)
1. The standard cover off the S25DA/25D saws
2. Power Sharp cover mostly found on Craftsman 2.1/2.3 saws
3. The S25CVA cover which uses a different front handle mount that does not interfere with the clutch cover. Instead of casting a different cover without the notch for the handle (like the traditional 25s) they stamped a piece of metal and riveted it over the notch. This is your type of cover. It
