got a question for all you youngsters (so far only two of yas have admitted to being older than me). i just rebuilt the carb for my 2150PR (a walbro WT-624) and had to guess when adjusting the metering lever since i don't have the tool. question is, how far below the carb body casting should the metering lever be? i just set it close to the adjacent shoulder elevation. just as soon get it right the second time. thanks

Walbro has a web site with everything you'll need to know.

I can't imagine there would be any appreciable difference, but honestly I can't tell hardly any difference in the way my 3400 cuts and my 3800. Both have identical compression, sharp chains and are tuned nicely for my area/conditions. You would think the larger displacement saw (the 3800) would outperform the 3400 enough for it to be readily apparent, but it isn't (to me).

I hear ya guys, it was just a thought, thinking too much........

I have two late model 3800 and a 3700, you can't tell the difference, as for durability well chrome bore should be better, BUT there are TONs of unlined 3400-3800 runnin fine. I really see no reason to want any more than the other, they all work great. I do perfer the lined cylinder of the 3700 with the thin rings but would never pay extra for it. I think theres a little better throttle response with a 3800 versus 3400.

Al, Let me check tomorrow. I might be able to help a fellow Poulan afflicted mate out.:D I have several 4000's. I have one that I havn't run for some time. It was my best one, till I found a like new one last fall. 2 of them I use for work, and one real nice one I ran at the GTG couple weeks ago. This other one has just been sitting, collecting dust ya might say.

I'll see if it will run, My guess is, it will. :D Clean it off, take a few pics. And see what ya think. Would be like sacrificing one of your kids, lol But a guy just doesn't NEED 4 of them.

Gregg,

Gregg,
That is mighty generous of you but I hate to tell you - I am 12,000 miles away! That 4000 should really stay with you as you never know, all your other Poulans might rot their fuel lines at the same time, right when you need a good saw to bring in some fire wood in the middle of a blizzard - to stop three starving orphans on your door step from freezing to death. Gotta be prepared man.
And I have to admit, there are plenty of good saws sitting out in my shed, all waiting for a turn, complaining because only the mouldy old green ones are getting a run. But if I ever get over your way, can I drop in and help you cut some of that balsa wood you guys burn?:msp_wink:

Al, I'll give ya that one. You guys have some crazy azz hard woods down there! I was thinking about that when I got the saw out. Wonder what kind of bars or chains they prefer for cutting petrified iron wood in Aus. LOL

Like Steve said, Our hard woods, might not be as hard or dry, as yours. But my old aching back muscles will beg to differ with you, when it comes to lifting, hauling it out of the woods, splitting & stacking it. ;)

I understand your a long ways away from Jenera, Ohio. But, if you ever wake up some morning and just need a Poulan 4000 fix. I got some good for what ails ya ! It has been raining non-stop for the last couple days, still raining this morning. So didn't get out for some pics. But did take a few in the shop, and by the way, it fired right up and run great!! LOL

Balsa wood in Ohio! Thats what we midwest fellas call that softwood out in the PNW. :ices_rofl:

On another note, I got the 71-A recoil back together and working good. I found a new recoil pulley for it an also new starter shoes, friction washers and a new starter cup.

My carb rebuild seems to be all good to go as well. It started in just a couple pulls on its own and runs out great now that the governor is blocked off.

I also went back to a .404 x 7 sprocket. That 404 x 8 was just huge and it didnt like it that well with that big bow on it.

Gregg,

Dammit Gregg..............you cut that out now. How many times must I see you mention that 'extra' Poulan 4000? I can't hold back CAD forever. I've got enough saws, (and projects...........both on the shelf and waiting to be shipped to me) for now. I MUST NOT PM you, asking how much you want for it. That saw looks fantastic. I want it but I don't need it (and can't afford the shipping, much less the saw right now). Nardoo (or somebody else here) save me from myself!

I MUST resist.....:dizzy:

Sigh......

Will PM you in a few months to see if ya still have it and are willing to part with it.

On another note....

Here's a listing for an early blue Sears Poulan 25 variant for those that've never seen one. I don't have any connection with the seller or the saw......etc etc etc...

Glad to hear all turned out well Mark.
I had my own gremlins to work out yesterday, my 3.7 was running good last week but started acting up at the end. Then 2 days ago it started running very choppy, wouldnt idle, died and no restart! This kind of stuff drives me bananas! Even tho I have a project on the bench, this took priority. First check my plug gap. It was a little wide at 0.030", so I set it back to Poulan specs between 0.023" and 0.027". Next I noticed that my fuel line was a little loose on the barb. I clamped it tight by twisting some stainless wire on it. I reset my carb to settings to a little more than one turn out on each. After a few pulls (had to get the fuel back up) it fired right up and sounded better than it ever did. Very good throttle response, and I made a few hard drops in some wood to see if it bogged like it was Sunday, Not at all. At this point I know my PP395 is gonna need a going over cause this 3.7 will spank it!
Not sure what the culprit was, maybe a combination of the plug, slight airleak and a not properly adjusted carb. My fault. At lest it was a cheap fix:clap:

I know exactly how you feel! I been fighting the CAD for a while now. Like for example, there was a real nice west coast 4400 Poulan that just ended on Ebay. Full wrap, 32" bar, nice looking saw. I had to fight the CAD Real bad on that one..:msp_scared: I have never sold a saw. But probably should. Would help the acquisition fund greatly.

I just hate to part with them, lol They become like family. So it will probably be sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Unless I have a catastrophic disaster with one of my other 4000's.

Gregg,

Hey, Mr Magnesium Mafia, I will help you. Now keep your hands off of that beautiful 4000 machine up in Ohio. Desist! Did that help?
By the sound of it Gregg is going to need it to protect himself from all those lions and tigers roaming the woods there. And when he wipes the blood spatter from the lovely green paint work I may just take a 12,000 mile ride in my old truck to run it in some sappy juniper berry trees there.:)

Gregg, play fair. Posting pictures of that seductive 4000 is below the belt! It is abeauty. And yes, I do wake up every morning needing a Poulan fix - it will never change, I have been for 30 years.

And Aussie wood is not so hard really. I have often had a chain stay sharp through four or five cuts.

Al.

Speaking of lions and tigers and bears, :msp_ohmy: do they eat Woodchucks? Haven't seen John lately. :msp_scared:

:ices_rofl: Juniper berry trees! True, we don't have the fossilized ancient dinosaur wood that you have.:) But are rocks are just as hard as yours. And if you happen to hit one:( can play hell with your chain. As I found out couple weeks ago.

The hardest wood that I cut here, would be Hickory, White & Red Oak, Ash, Sugar Maple. I do have several large Oaks that need to be taken down. But with the Emerald Ash Borer playing havoc with are Ash trees, those have been taking up most of my cutting time lately, and probably will for several more years.:(

Them lions, tigers and bears have a heck of a lot of highways to cross before getting up here to me...LOL I did see a pretty large mouse the other day, in the woods. Don't think he escaped from anyplace though.:) Last I heard, I think they got em all.

Getting that 4000 out and wiping the dust off and running it makes me want to put it into the wood again. But I think it will just stay in reserve for now. Backup for my backup...:)

Yes, Being that close, I might have considered packing some heat with me if out in the woods cutting.:)lol
I kinda figured they wouldn't stray to far from the area, at least for a while. That being where they got fed, and know where the food is.:) Kinda like me...I don't stray to far from the dinner table at certain times of the day.
