Sorry for all the newbe questions , but I like to research things,I think that is the fun part of the hobbie also.

The question I have is that I thought the Craftsman 358.356091 is a poulan 3800. I believe I saw a picture posted of one by a member on here that was grey and black and stated that it was a 3800. But I have seen other comments that they are a 3700. I am not doughting anyone I'm just tring to figure witch one it is.

I tried to acces the Poulan privat label link that I found in the Poulan group, but it wount download for me ,I don't know if it because I'm on dial-up( I live in the boonies) or my computer.

Thanks Scott

A grey/black Craftsman of that series would be a 3400 (Craftsman 3.4) or a 3800 (still called a 3.7). The earlier red/black Craftsman 3.7's could be either a 3700 or 3800. All the grey 3.7's were 3800's.

Gee, noticed one reason she won't run good, appears to be a severe lack of the low speed inlet screw/needle and spring.

So, new OEM fuel line and filter, new vent line with OEM duckbill and grommet, new airfilter (I know this thing pops with a squirt in the cylinder) back together.., choke out, throttle lock, yankyankyankyanklyank and...nada. No fuel up the line, it is old school clear line, bone dry. Hmm, thinks I, pesky plugged up screen inside carb, get carb off, looking at it, "hey, supposed to be like THREE screws here..." (inside carb not too bad, cleaned the little screen off and sprayed everything out, diaphragm good, etc)

So, what other make/model/carb (potentially) can I scrounge a compatible L screw and spring off of, (I have limited junkers here, but in town he has a fair pile at the dealers) or do I have to go scrounging online or in town?

Second dumb question, these large bar nuts. They appear to be 9/16ths, but the thread is wrong? None of my generic nuts that size fit, are they proprietary threads, do I need to buy an official bar nut? I know I need a different scrench as well, are they still available new? My 1/2 inch-13 mm ones no workee obviously...

thanks in advance...sorta rats, I know I am close to a good runner, wanted to cut with a new to me saw today....

If memory serves me right, the HDB carb used the same needles for both the High and Low. I would think that any HDB would be the same but wont swear by it.

The bar studs are 5/16" coarse thread and those were right from the factory with those 9/16" hex nuts with 5/16" threads in them.

You can use regular 5/16" nuts with a 1/2" hex if you want to but I suggest a flat washer under them.

Yep. 5/16-18 flange nuts can be found if you search a bit too. Try to get the smooth ones (instead of serrated) if you can.

Thanks!

Thanks man! I'll look around see what I have, if not, go scrounge some, or a spare used carb. I'll scrounge up or look for the nuts at the hardware store..seems it should have a plate across those two bar studs as well as the nuts, just to even out the pressure. There's no dawgs on this thing either, seems there should be at least one. More scrounging. Got another 3400 runner coming in the mail anyway (even swap for an 028 project saw from a member here), but I want multiple good runners, got several large trees coming up, I want every saw that runs to go down with me when I start, some are really big ones. Trying to find a larger bar and some loops for my 245a as well, I got that U boat banana bar 20, that's it for a big bar around my hacienda...

If you have a problem finding the HDB Lo or Hi speed screw, let me know. They are the same and I'm sure I have one from a dead carb.

Thanks for the offer

Thanks, I might need it, but I am fairly certain I can score what I need from the shop in town out of their junk pile, as they used to be a poulan dealer (ha..still trying to buy their old dealer sign from them...). I try to buy my new parts from them, I pay a bit more than online shopping, to keep on their good side, so I can buy used parts from the pile when I need them, and cheap. So far it is working out OK. They give me some stuff, that is cool as well, scored a small mount used husky bar the other day and two used but serviceable loops.

If I ever get flush, I am going to offer them x-cash for everything old and poulan they got.

Got a challenge on my hands..

My sister's BF handed me this "mess" Sunday. Its a Craftsman 2.3/16 that used to have the Power Sharp setup. Somebody gave it to him. Is in a case that was open & had water in it.:dizzy: I have seen cruddy saws in my day, but I think this one takes the cake. First thing I did was take off the muffler to see what it looked like. Very surprised, looks great what I can see so far. So started tearing it apart, and start to de-gunk it. LOL Took the fuel cap off, and tank was FULL of water. Oil tank had some in it, also.

The more I took apart, the more I'm thinking this thing might fly again. Gonna need all the obvious service items. Plus a chain adjuster, sprocket, bar & chain. Oh, and I probably should put a new handle on the recoil.:dizzy: I have never seen a bottle/can opener used as a pull handle before. :ices_rofl: If this thing can be put back in working order, my sister will have a saw of her own..LOL She can help him limb tree tops with it.

Gregg,

Yeah, that's pretty bad but you'd be surprised what a little Purple Power and an engine brush will do for it!

Gregg,

But just think of the feelings of pride and accomplishment you'll have at restoring this great old saw, Gregg. :msp_biggrin: That big grin is just the start. Looks like it even has the original banana nose bar. What a find! Maybe they'll insist on your keeping that paint can/bottle opener for your very own as payment for your work. (BTW, that was quite innovative on someone's part.) Have fun!
