I bought a Poulan Wild Thing P4018WT and used it for the first time yesterday. It ran great for awhile, but after a couple hours it lost power and wouldn't idle. It seemed like it was overheating a bit, so I took it home, let it cool, and adjusted the carb. It sounds right, but it just isn't cutting like it was. It is a refurb, so I'm wondering if something else isn't wrong with it.

My Dad had an old Wild Thing (last time I remember using it was '99), and we loved it. Never had a single problem with it. Finally tossed it after a house fire welded the spark plug in. I couldn't seem to find the same model anywhere, so I thought I'd try a newer one.

I really want this to work, so any advice would be excellent.

I current own three Poulan saws. Only one is a pro model and I use it the most. Very happy with cost versus performance.

What I am not happy with is their stupid pro pole saw. Since day one it has been hard to start, after a few minute of use if you try to cut over your head it would shut off. I finally got mad replaced everything in the fuel system except for the tank. It ran like a top for 1.5 hours and then started the same old crap. I will not recommend poulan pole saws to anyone and plan to buy a Sthil HT101 to replace the POS I have. I bet it don't have 10 hours on it at the most.

I'm not here to stick up for the pole saw from Poulan, it aint much, but then again it don't cost much.

I do have one just because it was a display model that was on closeout and it came with the string trimmer head also.

It was very hard to start, till I read the instructions on it and then it was not so bad. Very important to follow those directions.

What really helped was on the second day of owning it, I voided the warranty and modded that cat muffler on it. Drilled right through the plate inside from the back side and then welded a new larger outlet on it. Readjusted the carb and it now starts and runs pretty darn well.

The pole on them is very flimsy and you need to be carefull with it, but then it was only intended to be used by a homeowner, not for production.

Like I said I'm not saying anyone should buy one, but if you tinker with it like me and only need to trim a apple tree or something once and a while there worth what they cost.

Mine is mostly used as a weedwacker, but I still have the option to use it as a pole saw if I need to do an occasional small branch.

sorry to hear about the fire i know what that is like happened to me back in march of 1999 oh welcome to the forum

Is it running?

I am sure that it needs new fuel line, filter, and a carb kit, but other than that it should be a runner. I will take a pic of it tonight. It's a real solid unit with no missing or broken parts. Now all I need is one of those funny-shape tip poulan bars for it. The decal on the starter looks great, but the one on the clutch cover is gone, if there was ever one there.

Sounds pretty good for free! You will have it up and running in no time I'm sure.

I never did like those bars myself, but there out there if you look I guess.

PM me if you need any documents for it.

I don't recall the model number right now but mine is a polessaw only. I think mine is PP445. I think the combo weedwacker is 446T? Don't know if there is a real difference but rest assured after using a Sthil for a couple hours recently it will be my next pole saw.

Yeah, now I can race this against one of my super 2 homelites. I'll make sure that I bring them to the next GTG.

What chain and bar combo is best for this saw? 1/4" or 3/8"LP

Is it a 25DA or a S25DA? The S25 is 2.3 ci saw and will handle a 16" with 3/8's lp with ease. If its a plain 25DA then its a 2.1 ci saw and is right at home with a 14" and 3/8's lp.

If thats a S25 then you better leave your little Homelites at home to save them from the embarrassment they will surely end up getting.

oh, you mean the _place_ sweetwater...well not close enough to know which one you're speaking of. lemme go look around.

Does anyone know which way the piston fits on a S25DA or CVA? Putting my new one back together and don't see a directional arrow(similar to the 3400, 3700,etc saws). Looks like it doesn't matter but I want to be sure before I install it. Even the old piston had no marks on it.

I honestly can't remember if I ever had the piston out of one.

I would guess that the ring locating pins should be on the intake side though.
