Poulan 3700 vs. Makita 6401

Picked up a HD Makita 6401 on Friday and thought I'd test it against a Poulan 3700 I put together. Now this wasn't a precise test as I simply timed cuts by the 1001, 1002, method. Have to say the 6401 was significantly stonger and therefore much faster. Both have new chains(6401 actually has a low kickback chain). My gut feeling is the 3700 needs some work. Comp is only 120 vs. 180 for the 6401. Its also possible that it simply can't keep pace with the 6401.

Not quiet comparing apples to apples are we? The Makita is larger, newer designed and fresher. My 3700's do put out more compression then 120lbs so yours is probably kinda tired besides. It will probably still out cut a PM610, more of a apples to apples comparison.

Just so you know the part #'s I posted the other day for the 3700 rings are correct as I just got a set and they were the correct rings. If you need the thick rings you need to order 3800 rings as far as I can tell.

Yea, Mark. you are probably correct. I was simply looking at 61cc vs 64cc. Thanks for ring info. Maybe I'll tear the 3700 down again for something to do and see what rings are in it!

Switching 3700 pistons

Tore into my 3700 and have decided to go from thick rings(cause I don't have any good ones) to thin ones. Thick ring piston is chrome plated and cylinder isn't chrome. Thin ring piston isn't chrome( at least it doesn't look it). Can I use this piston or do you have to have a chrome, non-chrome relationship between piston and cylinder?

Bob, I'm not a pro by any means, but I don't believe chrome on chrome should be a problem. They chrome bores in firearms to lengthen barrel life/durability. I think the piston rings/bores in cylinders are chromed for the same reason. Hard chrome on hard chrome probably wears pretty well, in my own theory. I'd try it out!
 
I believe you are suppose to use chrome rings on cast iron liners and cast iron rings in chrome liners. You do not want hard rings wearing on a hard surface.

Bob, now I'm beginning to understand why your having problems with rings.

Is this saw your working on a Craftsman or a green Poulan?

Far as I know any 3.7 with a bare cly and a chrome piston is a 3800, not a 3700 and the IPL's verify that.

What your need are part # 530025933 rings, $3.75 apiece from Poulan.

Dont go trying to put a bare piston on a unplated cyl or a chrome piston on a chrome bore, your asking for trouble.

If you need it I got a good P/C from a 3800 style Craftsman 3.7 here that showed 130lbs compression before I pulled it down.
 
Who wants a brand new 245A

I always wished I would have got a brand new one way back when, but it's not too late now.

Since I can't buy one I'm going to build one. I got this 245A here that Randy sent me and have been saving up new parts for it. I think I have about everything that I need now so I got it tore down today.

I'm going to try to get over to my father in laws tomorrow to use his blast cabinet to strip alot of it down for a new paint job. I have the paint and new decals for it already.

Some of the new parts that are going in it is a new cylinder, rings, rod, brgs, muffler, all gaskets and seals, including all new oiler parts.

The only thing not new is a very good condition piston. This was a point ign saw, but had been converted to some kind of electronic module that seemed to show a good spark when I checked it, but I never used one of these before.

Should I try it, or should I use a complete factory electronic setup that I have here?

You don't want soft on soft either, ONE of the surfaces has to be harder than the other!

Well, I'm enclosing pictures of the two pistons. The one not in saw is non- chrome with small rings. One in the saw is, I swear, chrome( you tell me) with standard rings. Cyl from saw is non-plated. Appears from what you are all saying, I'd better get big rings as I shouldn't put a chrome piston in a chrome plated cylinder. That being said and to respond to Mark, As far as I know this came from a Poulan 3700. Now if someone swtiched piston and cylinder from a 3800 in its prior life I don't know. Guess I have to assume so, though, and get some 3800 rings.

I would vote to keep the original ignition design.

ray i will be looking more this evening to see if i can locate that gasket for the oil pump for the S25da for you so far i have not located it but am still searching

Calvin, you referring to Ray or Bob. I believe I was looking for a diaphragm for a S25DA and the pump to body gasket. If I'm wrong let me know.

Bob, you are correct by those photos!

Nothing is impossible and things happen even at the factory, but I'm guessng that the P/C had been changed at sometimes as I have different versions of the 3700 IPL's and non call for those thick rings.

Don't mean it didnt happen, could have been very late in the production run and I just never seen one or documentation on it.

Either way, that part# for the rings I listed should work and they show up on Poulans website so you should be able to get them.

I'm pretty well set I think, but what do you have? I guess a rim and drum setup for it would be fine and I could use a couple of sprocket brgs.

Maybe a set of points?

Bob, I got the ported 3.7 Craftsman put back together yesterday. Done a vac test on it. Held 14" for almost a half hour before I took it off.

Pressure tested it and like you I got a small bubble or two out of the clutch side seal every now and again. I used some NOS seals and they seemed a little stiff. No matter to me if it holds vac. Runs extremely well.

I also remembered that the oiler impluse hole should be blanked off when doing these test! I used a extra oiler cover, gasket and a inner tube gasket and it blocked it off perfect.

New 245A

Sounds to me like with all the effort you are putting into this to make it like a "New Saw", I would go with the original type ignition system.

I'm not opposed to making life simpler, kinda like converting old tractors from 6 volt to 12. and or with elec. ignition. There are good practical reasons to do it! But, You allways know it ain't like it was from the factory. LOL

Can't wait to see the finished product! I have never seen or run a 245.
I'm thinking this one will be as close to New as there will ever be.
