My cousins anyway. In my family we burn wood. Me, my dad, my uncle, my BIL, and both my cousins. My cousin Brian started with one saw. Then he wanted an S25 after using one of mine. So I found him a nice later model one that he uses a lot. Then one day I worked with him on a cleanup job. We had a big maple to cut up, I brought my PP395. He used it and said "I want one". So I set him up with a nice 3.7 that has now replaced his 290 for the most part. This is the truth: the 290 is his loaner saw! Which is crazy, cause it was expensive and I have it right now for service. Whoever cut with it must have hit the ground or pavement since there is black grit all over it and the new chain he bought is now junk. I only let a couple people use a saw now and then and they are experienced with saws. So I have his 3 saws and decided to post a pic.

Well here is my advice, put em in after the cases have been put back together. There is enough going on getting the case halves lined up and not knocking the sealant off and such already let alone trying to guide that crank trough the seal without buggering it up as well.

Since you have the cases apart though, dont miss the chance to counter sink the outside of the case bores to make it easier to drive the seals into the case. Makes all the difference in the world.

A little moto seal around the seal helps seal em up to the case as well.

You still need a seal protector over the crank when driving the seals in though to keep from flipping the lips. I use a piece of beer can wrapped around the crank.

Well. Mark, I went the other way. Should have read your post first, but I was itching to get them installed. Time will tell if I ruined the seals. I'll just have to be careful. Thankfully Nik helped me out sometime ago with a seal protector. Works great! I figure to use it when installing the crank into case half.

Here's a 245 with what I believe to be a clutch cover for a bow saw, maybe. I would love to get one but I would have to just ship it right to Mark to get it in running condition. Would it pull a 24" bar effortlessly?

Also, anybody ever put a "big-bore" kit on an S25? I'd like to build a 44 or 46cc "small" saw. Any factory cylinders that would bolt up?

I don't think so Nick. Get a cheap 2375 WildThing and open up the muffler. At 42cc's it'll cut real good .

Poula 3400 etal series of saws

Couple of questions:
1) I see that you can purchase a sparkplug wire for these saws. Has anyone tried replacing it in the coil? Seems to be in the coil pretty good, almost cemented.
2)Have several rear handles, some w/o the throttle return spring and some with it. This is the spring inside the handle between the throttle trigger and the two handle halves. Will the throttle return normally w/o this spring? Wonder if there was a design change. Noticed that the 3700 I'm working on doesn't have a spring and wonder if it'll work properly w/o one. Would like to know before I reinstall the rear handle. Will save me a lot of time. Maybe I should be the guinea pig!

Bob, I'm clueless as to the plug wire. I have only seen them saws with a spring, as far as I can recall. Been awhile since I had one apart. I was thinking the throttle spring on the carb itself, was what returned the trigger, and the spring in the handle was for the throttle lock mechanism. Like I say, its been awhile since I been into one.:confused:

I know some of the bigger Poulans, like the 5200, some had throttle locks, some didn't. Neither one of my 5200 or 4200 have one. But I think I have seen 5400's with a lock. As far as I know, all the 3400 style saws had a lock. Have to go higher up the knowledge ladder for a better answer, like Mark. LOL

I kinda miss spoke on that last response. Was referring to the "safety" interlock on the handle, not the throttle lock.:confused:

Okay. I was referring to the spring that is inside the front of the rear handle next to the thr
ottle trigger. It fits between the trigger and the right hand handle half. You can se it if you look inside the front of the handle.Oi

I haven't dOne a wire on the poulans yet but I did on an 031. I warmed the glue up with my heat gun then unscrewed it.
As far as the throttle spring goes, I think the carb has a spring as well. Mark and others may be more help.

You're correct Joe, the carb does have a spring on the throttle lever. I may find out if its strong enough to return the saw to idle w/o the spring in the handle. Have to wait for rings however before I can get to that point.

I just put a 2000 together.It doesen't have any spring other than the carb one.It works just great so far?I think its a 2000?Craftsman version LOL
 
clutch bad?

how do you tell if the clutch is bad or is going bad on a poulan 2300 or in my case craftsman 2.3...
 
symptoms

Depends on your symptoms. Is the chain moving at idle more than usual? Or is it slipping in the cut?

the is moving more at idle then it should starts up pretty decent cuts pretty well i only did about 10 test cuts last of my log...

i also replaced the check valve on the oiler and it seems like its oiling to much LOL i aint had one do that yet hahaha!
 
Is your idle too high?

I just realized how hard it is to type when your 8 month old pulls keys off your laptop keyboard.......

maybe a tad rebuilt the carb the meter arm was way out so i adjusted that.. wonderin if that is doin it or a bad seal it has no drop in rpms on either side .. it has the old style clutch the it did have a rimthat was just wasted so i put a donar spur on and reused that clutch .... with the bar off i can stop the spur with my finger on it but i have to press down more then normal... it got dark on me so has to wait till tommorow some time..

yea this saw has more then one problem... i have a perfect 2.0 on the shelf i will swap the clutch and spur everything out see what it does.. if it still does it then i will swap the whole carb...im also thinking the crank case vent is clogged as its oiling to much that im not sure what the fix is for that???? i will be reading and searching on it tonite after i hit the gym!
