My first post the other day http://www.arboristsite.com/chainsaw/186512.htm (with photos) someone suggested I look you guys up over here and post a photo of my old Poulans. They run and I use them every time I go rounding. Thanks to all for the info I'm sure I've gotten from you guys in the past to get these gems ticking again. I did not know their was a specific Poulan thread. I will devote some time to read the whole thing and I'm sure to take some notes along the way. I do plan to break them down and do a more "restoration" to them in the future. FYI: I found a quart of sublime green paint on the shelf at my local Advance Auto Parts store for $25...on the shelf. I already have a small sprayer so I'm set for that side of it.

Also I noticed a 4200 on Feebay this morning at 51 bucks right now if it hasn't been mentioned already.

Probably a silly question here, but since I'm still new, I don't have good questions yet. I'm working on some of my new(to me) S25s and DAs, and am trying to build 2 good runners that I can strip down and paint up so they look brand new. So far I am only able to distinguish the differences as the on/off switch and some of the recoil starter pulleys are metal vs. plastic. Are the points and condensors interchangeable between the two saws? Also, how do I remove the handle assembly once I remove the lower cover, the allen bolts around the carb, and the screw at the back of the handle. It appears to be hanging up on the manual oil linkage. I do have the service manual that Mark sent me already, and have consulted that already.

I guess I also need to ask if some had electronic ignitions that still had the bosses in the case for points too.

Thanks for any advice.

Nick

nick take the 3 screws around the carb off and the screw on the back of handle tap it with a rubber hammer should pop loose... all the points and coils will inter change with points saws if its solid state you will run into problems ....points with points solid state with solid state other then that most parts seem to interchange well the only differences ive seen is on cva saws carb filter cover handle bar etc . but they still seem to bolt up in a pinch. these guys will know much more on these saws joe 25da should be on later and will chime in and help out im sure they are great saws!!!

Craftsman 4200

I wonder if there's a Craftsman equivalent? I was really surprised when Sears had rings for my micro saw!

There are craftsman saws in 4200/5400 but the part# are the same, yes they "SAY" I can order them and have, but yet to receive them a month ago. All the parts I order lately say 1-2 weeks, I have about 4 orders floatin around out there from 4 weeks ago. Kinda lost hope in that dead horse!!!!

Thanks for everything and Happy Holidays All

Duane

Yep. Craftsman 4.2 and 5.2 were the equivelant saws. Aaron wants one of each!:jester:

So anyone know how to get seals for a 4200??? I've order them twice and looks like I'll never get them, all backorder from factory to HELL FREEZES over!!!
I've tried a few generic # but they don't even show up anymore.
This is my last try!!! I'm starting to really hate this saw for something as small as a $7.99 seal.

Thanks in advance
Duane

Duane, what in the world? You having a little PMS this week? :hmm3grin2orange:

Take it easy, its just a seal and there out there, no problem. National 471466.

Google that #. It is one of the easy ones to find and get. Google that # and see. Go to your NAPA, Autozone, Carquest, ORileys or whatever and order them. Or go to any brg supply like Motion Industries etc. OR go to ebay, there listed there as well.

Hate a 1975 saw cause you have to wait to get a seal for it? Damn man, you aint got another saw to use in the meantime?

Sorry for busting your chops but you had that one coming... :ices_rofl:

Yep, Craftsman Pro 4.2 358.358870 and Craftsman 5.2 358.358890

I know where a couple are.

Thanks for the info on the seals, Mark. Down here most every seal has its size moulded into the rubber. The writing is tiny and I have to use a little 10x hand magnifier to read it. It will say something like 12x24x5 which means the shaft is 12mm, the housing it fits in is 24mm in diameter and the seal is 5mm thick.

I just go into my local bearing supply shop and they nearly always have what I want in stock. You need a double lip seal and ask for the best one - usually a buck or so dearer. You are supposed to use metal framed seals but I have a couple of saws running synthetic outers. I even have an 026 running a single lip seal - supposedly a big no no. I did that as I wanted to use the saw immediately and that is all I had. I was surprised that it ran OK but I left it in and it has been running fine for 12 months.

I know I should be running OEM seals but luckily my saws don't.

I hear you, lots of folks running single lip seals with a wiper and they thing there running double lip seals. In fact aint that what a double lip seal is? The wiper really dont seal much, just helps keep crap out of the sealing lip.

(BTW I'm needing more then a 10X magnifier now days...)

I didnt say I didnt know where any more are did I? :hmm3grin2orange:

I know mine are in the shed, I'm not sure exactly where yours are at this moment. I hope there not still on the front porch... :hmm3grin2orange:

I hope they is.:hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange:

We don't get Craftsman saws down here but they kinda remind me of another brand. Just can't put my finger on it - it will probably come to me later.

Your on your way to KY tonight arent you?

Maybe. I suspect a shorter hillbilly, one strap on his bibs hanging unsnapped, with cold bare feets is putting his saws in the shed, and checking his ammo supply about now. Maybe I'll wait for the snow at home instead.

They been in the shed ever since the Poulan lovers GTG!!!
Other old junks had to take to the porch!

If you are headed this way give me a holler!!
We'll have a cup of coffee.............................or some manner of beverage.

Saws like those are scarce around here but if I keep my eyes open one will eventually show up. Best I can find of late were a couple or three Daytons and a 3400 Poulan and that 3.0 Craftsman, all pretty good saws except the Dayton branded 25 Poulan, it's been slightly stuck but it's free now but needs rings. I probably won't get around to it until next Spring. If I have time I may go all through it, outside of it is in great shape. I checked the compression and it was pretty low.
