Oh yeah, Poulan 4900, I don't think it was run to much in its life. Guy down the street had it listed on CL for $75

how do you tell if the clutch is bad or is going bad on a poulan 2300 or in my case craftsman 2.3...

well, idle is the first thing. if it is still slipping as it should at low RPMs, lowering them a bit may solve the problem right off.

If the springs are somehow shot, it would spin out too easily and engage before it was suppose to, but I have a hard time picturing how this would happen. It's a long-shot. one of the springs could be gone, but it sounds like this has been your saw for a while and you would have noticed it.

last thing is if it somehow bound in the engaged position --- another long-shot.

when i think of clutches going bad i usually think of wear, which causes slippage rather than early engagement... but I've only messed with a few saws compared to most of the folks here.

nope its new to me!

nope my girl got it off ebay for me for my birth day it said it ran good.... and in the pic looked great the rim was very tore up!!!! swapped it with a spur.. i think it was run with the oiler not workin as the fellow said the chain was really bad but saw was good.. so far ive replaced the recoil gear handle on the pull cord' bar and chain spur fuel lines air filter did the carb..also the check valve thing behind the clutch.. i did not do the fuel filter as it looked brand new but that could be a problem.. i did not have one new on hand i usually replace them first thing i will get that first thing later today or sunday..just seems like it wants to engage till i turn the idle so low it wont run ... i have alot of stuff to cross check that way im not ordering parts i dont need.... will get pics up soon!

it was the clutch!

swapped out the clutch retuned the carb again and she seems pretty decent!!! these micros are a pain in the azz to adjust the carbs i see why folks drill holes in the side!!!! I may take and old top and notch it so i can get close to where it needs to be!!! it makes a difference with the top on or off had to do it 4 times .. finally just held the top on as tight as i could insted of unscrewing it !!! it close now i need to work it!!!! it matches my 3.7 really nice!!!! get that one going i will be A happy camper!

You have to have a very clean air filter (don't oil it) and adjust the carb a tad (1/8 turn) leaner. Then when you put the top on it it should be just about right. Don't make the mistake of just putting any old foam rubber in there for a filter, use a filter. Some more of my hard-earned experience.

its running real good!

At this point in time its running so well i dont wanna mess with it LMAO! ima use it hard over the next month as my trailer saw ....

it looked ok..

'what was wrong with the one that came with it? could you tell?

it looked good i woulda swore it looked fine... but seemed like it was engagin to easy it was the old style.... i know the rim was all tore up inside the drum looked like it got really hot at one point it was not bad i coulda used it with just the spur change..... just turned it off and on as it started right up but when im on the ground cutting i leave the saw run unless im dragging stuff out from the back yard...*shrugs*its workin now so im all cool with it!!!

I have two saws on the bench that need clutches, heat has taken its effect on the springs. Otherwise, the shoes are minty. Even the drum is in good shape, albeit somewhat blued.

thats a great idea!

My latest aquisition a Poulan 2800

This is my latest saw I picked up. I am going to go through the carb and lines. I notice it looks a little tweaked, I think it may need a mount or two. What do you guys think? Does anybody have a service manual for the 2800 I could get a copy of? I will ask in the beg for manuals also.

Thats a pretty good looking 2800. Sure looks like only a mount problem.

K22-HDA is the rebuild kit for that carb and you need 1/8ID X 3/16OD fuel line for the vent and fuel line. Make sure the duckbill valve is there for the vent.

PM me a email address.....

Edit, I should add, that I think that saw is a type 1 when you go looking for mounts for it.

I just missed one like that at the auction Saturday, already have a 3500 but would have been nice to have another one..did manage to come away with a nice 245 however.

You guys always seem to find cool big cube saws. I've been looking locally and it seems the largest saws around my area are 50cc and the majority of them are Wildthings or MS250s that people want an absolute mint for.

Yeah, it would have been quite a drive to central Indiana. The Stihls with any size went pretty pricey as far as I was concerned. Most went for around $200 and they weren't the ones most people prefer.

I was born and raised between Rennselear and Lafayette, so I'm very familiar with Indiana. I guess I need to be down in the rolling hills south of Indy to find the big saws. All the ones up here west of Chicago are owned by "pro homeowners" that think an 18" bar is huge and all they need for pruning their 5 year old trees in their cookie cutter subdivisions. I on the other hand have real trees and that requires a real saw.
