The ModifiedMark 3700 muffler mod is unsurpassed in functionality, beauty and........COOL factor.
There are several posted here in this thread.
He is also doing a louvre style muff mod now that, although not NEARLY as cool is very functional and takes about 1/4th the time.

Mike

Yea, I used to drill two 1/2 in. or so holes in the bottom of the muffler after enlarging the holes in the baffle. After seeing Mark's side discharge slot, similar to the 4000, I now use that approach. Haven't tested either method to see if there are perf. differances but my gut tells me the front holes may allow for more airflow.

Well its been at least 19 yrs and it still runs so I'd say you did good. Of course it depends on how much you've run it but still----almost 20 yrs!!!!!!!
Bob

I don't use chainsaws nearly as much as I did back then but this one would still go. I just got done putting a new fuel line on it and cleaned the carburetor. I ran it awhile and now it sits empty. I have enough wood already cut to last for another year or so but next year there's a medium size maple I have my eye on. I have so many saws in my arsenal right now that not any one gets used a whole lot.

5400 ouch

Last night I was taking my 5400 apart to replace the crank seals, I hit one of the fins on the flywheel and broke it off:mad2:. So I'm on the search for a flywheel, and from what I can tell a 5200 and 5400 are the same. I found one on ebay but want to make sure it will work.

Thanks Scott

You'd probably be just fine running it with a broken fin, or you could break the opposite fin for balance.

I'll let the real Poulan guys address the compatibility concern ;).

As far as I know...they will interchange. The 4000 that I use a lot, had a broken fin on it when I got it. Ran it that way for some time. Couldn't tell any difference. But, It bugged me knowing it was busted. Eventually just replaced it.. Now I don't think about it any more. LOL:msp_tongue:

Thanks Chris I did some searching on here and it seems to be 50/50 as to what people advise on running one broken.

Gregg,
Thanks Gregg I thought you had posted here before one of your 4000's had a broken one that you used that way for awhile. And I think it would bug me also.

According to the IPL's I have, Scott, the flywheels for the 5400 & the 5200 are the same, part # 530039066.

Thanks 67 Mustang that is waht I was thinking, but always nice to have conformation.

ive been trying to get my phone to zoom in but it keeps blurrin on me... do you all have any pics you could show me of different stages of scoring??this one has real good compression but lots of light lines on the bottom half of the piston ... so should i run it? the lines are not deep and it has real good compressin but im guessin before long it will lean fail yes no? weigh in on this if you would .. or if you could post a few pics of different stages and let me know whats acceptable and whats not... if its scored at all i dont consider it a runner but i can be a lil anal,,,this pic is the best i could get with out tearin it all apart...

I have cleaned up many that were worse than that appears from here.
As T-bone said you really need to pull it to see how bad it is.
If you have a set of calipers, measure the slug and the bore.
I will run them as sloppy as .008, but most here won't.

Mike

You'd be surprised how much you can do to clean up a piston. Tbone is correct in that you should remove the cylinder to inspect both the cylinder and piston. For scoring, I use a scotchbrite pad and clean it up so if I run my fingerrnail over the scoring it doesn't catch. I do the same for the cylinder. In a pinch, I'll flip the rings to improve comp. a little. The top ring gets more wear so if you flip them around it helps a little.
Bob

I agree. Also, from the blurry pic the scoring looks to me to be caused by carbon buildup. That crap is HARD and will score up a piston good. That then hastens alluminum transfer from the piston to the cylinder wall. You're gonna want to pull it apart to get that stuff out in any case.

It's no big deal. I got the 3400 for $15.00, and the guy lived two minutes from me, I could've walked to his house. I'd rather see the parts go to folks who'll use them, rather than have them sit in a dusty box in my garage. Which reminds me, I need to pull a few parts from the 3400 & the 361.

thanks again!

Try to find a flywheel with the forked starter dogs. The 4200 and 5200 series didn't have the best recoil system on them.

clean 2400
