Old51AVE,
Nice looking saws, the new stuff just don't intrest me much. But, I'm thinking that its like most anything, If you take care of it, and service it, it will last a very long time. Unfortunately, most don't get either. Then the saws get a bad name or kicked to the curb.
I like the idea of replacing the bar hold down like that!

Gregg,

Gregg can i use this to paint with ?
http://www.discount-paint-spray-guns.com/sh288880.html

If so what kind and color ?

That looks to be a lot more paint gun than is required for small saw parts.
I'm certainly no painting expert, far from it. I have an old 1 qt. spray gun that I used on larger stuff, like farm machinery years ago. If I were to paint saw parts with one now days, I think I would get a much smaller outfit suited for the task. The only paint I ever used was enamel with a hardner. Don't know a thing about any other types.

Gregg

OK, Which one of you guys bought this 4000 on ebay, that just ended?:)
I had my eye on it, but didn't bid. New it would go higher than I could afford.
The thing about it that caught my intrest, was that it had the clutch cover & chain catcher setup for a bow. Looked like it would be a great saw to have a bow saw setup on. which I don't have.

Gregg,

Nope wasn't me! I seen it and was actually turned off a little by the bow cover. BUT thats just me and it might have been a plus for someone else.

Looked like a nice example of the 4000 though and probably brought a fair price in the end.

If anyone interested, I just posted a good project 3400 and a like new Craftsman 2.8/ PP295 or 2900 in the trading post

Thanks Gregg, ditto for your purdy yeller one too! I love the rear isolation mount on those saws, it looks like something off of an aircraft!
I take as much care with my own stuff as I do with my employers/customers, it's just ingrained in me I guess.
I like the old iron as well, but sometimes I like to see how far I can go, on the cheap! All I could find @ my local cheap spot were saws with the tool-less adjusters on them! Once I found out it was an inboard clutch and the brake is on the body, it's just the cover and they cost $6! Mine has the tensioner, but I use the Intenz system as a back up/redundancy. I actually like the Intenz system and it gives me the option of being able to use all my bars on all my saws. I'll have to try out that bar on my 330 sometime!

I have the saw all painted up and ready to go (almost!) This is Duracoat Lime Green. Featured are photos of both before and after...

Put a chain/bar combo on it, and tuned a little bit more. After it seemed to be running well, I made some noodles! This saw pulls hard and runs great. Glad I went with the 20" -- seems to be just about right. The 24" bar made it front-heavy. The 20" makes this 4200 almost balanced when you dangle it by the top handle.

Oh yes, you can see on photo #3 the choke pull we made out of fence wire. It works perfectly as well.

My last hassle is to get the lid on the top. It's painted and ready, but I am having trouble getting the old broken screws out of the chassis. I have tried drilling/extracting with a screw extractor, to no avail. They may get drilled/tapped the next size up. Those screws stuck in there are HARD! I'm using a cobalt bit and a drill press, and it's slow going!

Adjusting oiler on 4200

I see there is a screw accessible from the bottom of the saw. I can turn it in until it bottoms out... Is screwing it in shutting off/slowing the flow of the oil? Do I turn it out to increase oil flow?

(Or do I have it backwards...)

If my memory is correct I believe you screw it counter clockwise to increase oil flow.

I just picked up a Poulan 3800 myself. It's a nice saw!

Anyone know where I can get a bucking spike / felling dog for it? I've searched eBay but no dice. If anyone knows of a source it'd be much obliged. :)

Nice lookin 3800 WoodChucker81
I don't have one that model, but I think the bucking dog is the same as the 3400, 3700, 4000 saws. You just have to watch ebay and chainsawr.com.
He has one listed ocasionally, from parted saws. You might send him an Email and see if he has one. He doesn't allways list everything he has.:)
They are great saws for a 30 year old design. I love em!

Gregg,

The 3800 I have....

Is / was there ever a later model that eventually had a working chainbrake?? And furthermore, can one be retrofitted to the current 3800 I have??

I'm totally new to the oldschool Poulan saws - and I just picked up that 3800 on Friday. Expect lot's of noob questions. :)
