New paint on another old green junk

Got the 245A tore down, cleaned up and repainted today. The green turned out pretty good.

This post is for Randy, Barneyrb to see that his old saw is going to amout to something after all.

Its drying by the stove for now. I'll probably have everything together in 1 spot early next week to put it together, that is as soon as Calvin sends me those points and rings.

Yeah I thought you would like to see this!

Well I guess I do owe ya something, but I'm pretty sure it won't be this one.

Yea I like the new signature also! Thing is a good fella made it for me and if I told you who it was, I'd have to kill ya then.

I can't hardly even spell signature, so doing one of them is beyond me. Heck I even had trouble getting it posted as a signature.

And for the rest, yes it is is 1970 Sublime green. It is very close in color, in fact closer to some of my Poulans then others, as they all seem to vary some in shade. It will be fine.

I used a acrylic enamal single stage with the hardner. It would be expensive to do from scratch, but I have a supply of hardner and reducer here left from other jobs. The 1/2 pint of paint was like $18 so it isnt much more then a few rattle cans otherwise. It probably took about 1/2 the 1/2 pint.

Soon as the rings arrive I'll start putting it together so its probably good that I don't have them right now so the paint can set a few days.

Yep I love my heated shop! The old homemade stove gets it done quite well.

Thats a good deal! Just make sure the carb is set rich enough as they tend to be lean out of the box. A muffler mod helps them alot also if you can do that.

This is a example of what I was telling the previous poster, the retired guy that his probably isn't worth the price of a P/C for it.

m/mark,

what would be the muffler mod & how would you do it. ??

candyman

It involves opening up the restrictions inside the muffler itself and making a larger exit hole in it as well.

Do a search here as its probably been discussed before. The is also a thread at the top of the page that deals strictly with muffler mods.

Yep, I figure (if I ever get up that way) a 6-pack oughta bout square us up.

Thats a great color match from what I can tell Mark. Looks good!

You don't happen to know a color code for that do you?
My cousin, up the road here does custom painting, and has a PPG paint tint contraption that he uses, way over my head, but I think he would need a factory number to duplicate it.

If ya watch the Barret-Jackson car auction on Speed Channel this week, He painted and did the resto work on that "Gate Job" Mercury Funny car. It sells saturday evening sometime.

I know your an old Ford man, So I know you would love the engine in that car. The old Ford 427!

Might be cost prohibitive to have him mix paint for my old Poulans, LOL
I know the the Tints he uses for that PPG paint contraption, some are unbeilvably expensive.

Can't wait to see more pics of the finished saw your workin on!

Gregg,

Greg, just tell them that you want 1970 mopar sublime green. Like I said it was $18 for a half pint. The reducer and hardner is what makes it expensive, but you dont need much of either maybe you cousin has some there you could get. You only need just a drop of both.

Pay attention now, this is the color Poulans are supposed to be!

( I couldnt resist! )

Mark, how did you apply? Use an airbrush or regular HVLP gun. I ask because I don't want to mix too much paint and hardner and waste what I don't use. I have qt. of paint and hardner that was made for me and wonder about how much to mix to get the job done.

Before I replaced the crank seals and crank bearings, the saw raced at WOT even with the idle speed screw backed all of the way out. The new crank seals hold 5 psi and show no sign of leakage. I'll see what I can find at Acres. I might have messed up the metering lever height and set the metering needle too low when I put in a carb kit. It has a Walbro WT-239 carb.

News Flash! I rechecked my saw and found out why it wouldn't idle. I had the L screw turned all the way in. Its original setting was 3/4 turn. I backed the L out to its original setting of 3/4 turn. I will run the saw again as soon as the weather allows.

It is extremely difficult to troubleshoot and tune a saw while an obnoxious drunk with a bad hangover sneaks up on you in your garage or in your backyard and breathes down your neck. I might just have to open a Can of Whup-Ass or seek a Restraining Order if the discourteous drunk stalker harasses me again.

Yesterday, I started my Craftsman 358.356242 (rebadged Poulan 2500) and had it idling at about 2,700 RPM. I still need to dial in the L and H screws. Prior to the overhaul, the clutch was slipping, it was leaking bar oil and it was leaking around the crank seals. Just for fun, I overhauled it with new carb kit, fuel line and fuel filter, clutch drum/bearing/sprocket assy, oil pump and crank bearings/seals. This 40cc saw is 17 years old and has cut many cords of wood. It has paid for itself several times.

Bob, I used a small siphon touch up gun. My HVLP gun was way overkill for this job.

Just for the record I use about 1/4 pint of paint to do this.

So your quart should paint 6-8 saws?

With hardner and reducer it was about 3/4 cup on the touch up gun.

It was fun spraying parts while hanging and chasing them around. My left hand ended up green from steading them from the backside while spraying!

I'm in the shop right now and the parts are hard as a rock and look great. I just took em down from hanging and put them on a shelf for now.

I'm just taking a break right now and just finished rebuilding the carb and fuel cap for it. Put the nos filter on the fuel pickup and made up new fuel lines for it.

Calvin is sending the points and rings today so hopefully they will make here by Satuday and I'll start putting it together.

Get it tuned in an run it! I have a 2500 that I revived sometime ago. My son loves it and grabs it first alot.

Great running with a modest muffler mod and it works good as a limbing saw for these full of brush Oaks around here.
