The 3800 I have....

Is / was there ever a later model that eventually had a working chainbrake?? And furthermore, can one be retrofitted to the current 3800 I have??

I'm totally new to the oldschool Poulan saws - and I just picked up that 3800 on Friday. Expect lot's of noob questions. :)

Yes, there was a chain brake available for those older Poulans, as an option.
But, they are very rarely seen. Seems they were more poular on the saws sold in Canada. Maybe it was a requirement for saws sold in Canada, I don't know.

Gregg,

Man I'd love to get my hands on a chainbrake setup for that 3800. Where would one even start to look??

you and a lot of other guys including me Jason. Every now and then they pop up on the 'bay but they can go for more than you payed for your saw....
allow me to shamelessly repost a pic of the one I rebuilt for my dad,

Thats a beauty Nik

I think there was a NOS chain brake setup that sold on ebay few months ago. From a dealer that went out of buissnes. Nik might have a better memory than me, but I think it went for $80.00, In any case, it was expensive!! to say the least.

I just seen this, nice 3800!

I don't understand the chain brake searching myself, but here is the chainbrake kit # in case you happen to run across one, and there has to be some on a shelf somewhere, in Canada if no place else.

Good luck with your search.

Lawrence (Petesoldsaws) So lets start a Poulan thread!!! (Lawrence and Jerry, we want your input too) Old Poulan owners UNITE!!!!

i found this saw at the scrap metal yard and paid .40/lb for it. it's in really nice condition. Poulan Model 53, 82cc. it's got good spark and compression but haven't gotten it running yet. been working on a Mac 1-85... but this 53 is really clean and the bar looks barely used. i think it's a keeper!

Try this one Woodchucker. I looked at Acres site and he doesn't have a picture of a 3800, if it looks like a 3300 or 3500, the brake on that orange one should work. I have a 3300, and the clutch is the same as my 2800. Maybe Mark or Calvin would know. If you do get these, I'll buy the topcover from the green one from you if you want to part with it.

I didn't go back to your link and saw the picture. This one won't work, but I'll leave it up for anyone else interested. That 3800 is a nice looking saw.

Nope those won't work, different series.

Seems like not too many people are fond of these series of Poulans, but I happen to love mine!
First thing I wood do is get rid of that clutch cover and tensioner (weak spot) and get a cover with the 2 bar nuts! P/N # 530058933 will get you a cover and tensioner for about $6 bux.Don't forget to get the 2 bar nuts, P/N # 530015917 (x2) about $0.50 ea. If your a bit more inclined, you can do a muffler mod (really wakes up this saw) and a carb mod (so you can tune with a regular screwdriver). I ran an 18" bar on it and it did ok, I switched to a 16" bar and that new Oregon 91vxl chain and ended up with a nice, cheap strato-screamer for about $120cdn!

Congrats on your new saw!

Old51AVE :greenchainsaw:

I picked one up at Home Depot this weekend for $99.99. Not sure why it was there but, it was new with the case, sitting on top of the box in a corner. All the HD's around here have gone to the red Homies. Funny thing, it had the traditional two nut bar mount & adjuster rather than the tool-less one that I see often. I didn't need another saw but, I bought it anyway.

I have this same saw and for the money, it is a pretty dang good one. I just wish they would fix the fuel caps so they don't swell and stick. I have two to rotate them.

Good idea on the bar and chain change. I will try that when my 18 chains are gone.

Got a stupid question. My 22" poulan pro bar say its 3/8 050, but 3/8 050 chain does not fit. The junk oregon safety chain that came with it appears to be .325. Anyone know what chain the bar actually takes?.

Its 3/8s low profile probably. That chain is .365 instead of .375 which is regular 3/8's. I think you want to get a low profile 3/8's. I like the Woodsman Pro 30LP from Baileys. Really wakes up those smaller saws.

This is pretty cool

I always wondered why the S25 series saws never came with dawgs/bucking spikes since these were regarded as a pro saw of their time. I also wondered what the 2 little holes next to the bar adjust were for. Well I figured it out. Turns out Poulan DID offer a spike or "spur" as they call it. I found a NOS one the other day. I must say looks cool on the saw! The only problem was getting 25 years of saw dust mixed with sap out of the threads. Now i just need a bad a$$ sugi bar like Ohiogreggs! Check it out.

Whats cool is the spike is adjustable, you can put it lower than this.

Here you can just see the lower spike.

Nope that saw came with 3/8's .050 never seen different.

Bars says 3/8's .050 then thats what it is. Dont know what your trying to put on it.

That looks good, I have not seen one for awhile.
