The 5400 is on the bench and almost complete, I ran out of wd40 so will have to wait to finish as the pitch is really thick. This will be it for awhile until I can round up some clutch covers and starter housings, I will get them cleaned up and ready for when I do get them. I made a video of the 8500 in a piece of Hawthorne and thought the tune was close but ended up messing with it about 3/4 through the log and just ended up putting it back to where it was. I will also note that a 8 pin 3/8 on a 28 inch bar in hard wood bogs the saw down a little, but should cruiz right through the softwoods we have around here.

I will have to say this saw is a hoot to run and has to be one of the best sounding saws right up there with the 045 super.

wow, for some reason I had you pinned for an older fella.........very cool video. Dad and uncle both have an 8500, I need my own....
and a 4000.

Yeah, if I had a lathe, I could do it on an as needed basis, for you guys, but alas,my barn still has a dirt floor and I have to prioritize building a bigger shop out there before I get a lathe.

Is this a hint............. anybody have a dwg? If you guys can be patient, I can probably make some and run them as filler work......

What batch size?

3400 races from idle

Sometimes my 3400 will start excellerating from idle. If I blip the throttle it will choke it out. Is this most likely a carb issue or something else?

Sounds like an air leak. It should probably have a good going over with new fuel lines, filter, carb gasket (and kit). May even be loose screws. I'd start with small stuff around the carb.

Scored a free 2300 cva yesterday. Simply wouldn't start or run and had a cracked handle. I tore it down last night and have never seen so much oil/sawdust cake in my life. The air filter was completely clogged. I de-caked the filter, splinted the handle, new fuel line, cleaned the muffler, and after some coaxing, got it running. Sweet! My first salvage saw! Needs a new bar though. Current bar is chipped to hell on the cutting edge. I'll flip it over for now, so it'll work:)

If you want a new handle for that, I have and extra one.

--I'll let you know, didn't work on it today, did gardening and chores....one member has told me his is out 2.5 on the H side.

I have my GF (artiste...) talked into painting it! hahaha this should be cool....pics when it happens.

edit: Went back in with the wylde thange and tightened intake boot, that sucks, can't get anything in there. Takes a little allen, I don't know what size but I crammed one I had in there and twisted them tight. Are these metric or standard? I see failure mode there easy if they rattle loose like that, massive air leak.

..anyway, ran the H to 2.25 out, the L at 1.75 out. Pushed bulb a few times, pulled choke, locked throttle, popped first pull. Pushed in choke, up and running good at second pull. Let it run a minute, turned the idle down a scosh.

No airfilter yet (doesn't exist, just the backing plate) or muff mod and I just noticed some ringmeat has the wrong handle bar on it. Clutch side mounting bolt holes don't line up, only one bolt in there now. Plus it sticks out too far forward and interferes with the chainbrake, not enough clearance. Bogus....have to scrounge that now....running and oiling good though. Got plenty of vibes to it I notice. That might have a little to do with the wrong handle bar.

Might check the crankshaft seals also.

OK, a little more playing with this thing after work. When you hold it running clutch side down is when it runs up the rpm's. If this is a leaking seal which side? Also I have a pressure/vacuum tester but I'm unsure of where you hook it up on a 3400. Help will be appreciated

Test it like you would any other saw. Block of both ports, affix your vacuum/pressure source and go. Usually the flywheel side from what I've read here, you can see the leak with a little grease. If you can't see both seals, make it so.

I'm guessing attach the vacuum source to the spark plug hole. I've had the tester awhile but haven't had occasion to use it.

new pistons for WT's. i know ive seen this talked about before. the older wt's have bare cylinders and coated pistons(2375) do the newer ones(4018) have the same setup? ive finally had my 4018 toast a piston,my 2375 did several years ago. ive got new pistons for both(cheap),cani just clean up the cylinders(lite sandering) and go?

i know this is somewhat vague question im on sleep deprivation mode, lol

That's exactly the way my Homelite XL12 did before I replaced the clutch side seal. Runs good now. The clutch side is generally subject to more abuse, I think.

Probably, if they're not too bad.

Hey guys, he may kill me for this, but oh well. Paul, AKA Stubnail has been MIA for a little bit, which I found odd because I sold him a saw and once I shipped it, I never heard back. He has been fighting some blood pressure problems for the last week or so. Keep him in your thoughts if you will. His posts and emails always make me chuckle, and he's a good character to have around.

Get well Stubby! At least the Paypal cleared:blob2::blob2::blob2::blob2:LOL

Hypertension is nothing to muck about with, take it from someone who has wrestled with it his entire adult life. Getting it squared away is quite tiresome and the meds can make you feel like boiled ass until you adjust to them.
Godspeed.

I have a feeling he does feel like boiled ass. I hope he gets squared away and feels better soon.

Once I get a chance to go back out to the garage, I'll snap a pick of the little pick I made to pull crank seals out of the case without splitting it. I got that 4000 running real nice and it absolutely pulls that 24" bar without a problem.
