--way cool, you can see it has some cojones! Now that you have run it a fair bit, what modern current in production saw do you think it compares the closest with?

And that's pine beetle damage? What will happen to the wood? I've had this thought on that that, that supplementing it into a coal electricity plant might be the best, nice clean burn, get something practical from it, or use it to produce "biochar" for the ag community.

The saw has a 8 pin rim running full comp on a 24 inch bar and I was standing on it, it was easier to stall out my 441, and I did pinch my 441 and in no way did it back out of the cut. I also took along my MM'd 045super and will say the 045 revs higher but the 8500 has noticeably more torque. I would have to run some other saws along with it to really compare it to another saw.

Yes that is the bark beetle larva, it just gets under the bark and kills the tree. The wood seasons real nice for firewood, I cut beetle kill trees almost exclusively for my firewood as most of it is already seasoned and I don't have to store it.

I do not have a picture at this time. I have a 3400 and the Craftsman looks like it, except it has a different airfilter. I will try to get a picture tomorrow. I may have got the model number wrong. Thanks Tom

Actually, It was I that got the saws mixed up. The number on the top of my Craftsman 3.0 is: 358.356081 so if that's your number you have a Craftsman 3.0 which I think is a darned good saw.

For some reason Poulan called it a 3400 and Craftsman calls it a 3.0. They share the same bore and stroke size.

The last time I was in Yellowstone about 2 years ago on horse back it looked like about 25% of the trees were dead due to bark beetle.

Sears/Craftsman did (and still does) wierd things regarding badging/labeling saws, mowers, and such. They have 'fudged' the displacement or HP badging on certain models to meet a lower price-point. They never screw the customer (by saying a 3.0ci saw is 3.4ci for example). The 'fudge' always goes the other way. They've labeled 42cc saws as 36cc, 3.4ci saws as 3.0ci, and 6HP mowers as 5.0HP............all when meeting a certain price-point. I don't understand the economics of it, but it must work for them. They've been doing it for at least 30 years....

After looking at the IPL I believe that to be the same as my saw. The oil pump looks like one I have for sale on fleabay and it is for the 3400 and other model saws. I mentioned in an earlier post that the bore measured 1.810". Would that be a 3400. I have four books on chainsaws and none give the bore or stroke. Thanks Tom

Yes a 1.810" bore would for sure be a 3400.

Someone before posted that they had the same saw that was a 3.0 when it was indeed a 3.4 saw. Like Aaron said I also said earlier that it must have been a limited run to meet a certain price point for a sale or something.

Jim looks like you got that one all sorted out and running very well. You can probably lean it out a touch now.

Your preaching to the choir here though about the power, I know for a fact how they run and so do others here. Thats why we all clammor for them!

I can't remember the bore measurements for the 3400-4000 saws (and Acres doesn't list them). The stroke is the same for all four versions. Only the bore measurements differ. Does the saw have a chromed piston and a bare alluminum bore? That'd make it a 3400 or 3800 (and not a 3700 or 4000).

From memory, I think it is the other way. A chrome cylinder and an alluminum piston, but I will check tomorrow and make pictures. Thanks Tom

This should help.

That's just insane.

Nick

Weeeellllll. Maybe, maybe not. To you maybe, but to me insane is people spending 50K+ on a diesel pickup with heated leather seats etc, just to haul there lunch box to work.

Just a example but someone wants it and has the money, so the value of that AC saw is what it brings. That day anyway.

Pro 335

I've got a PP335 going that doesn't have spark. What's involved in changing out the coil?

Until I buy one, then magically the price goes down!

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

I've gotten the "all clear" from the likely suspects here (LOL), so I feel I can post the link to the big money Allis Chalmers 95 (rebadged Poulan 361) auction on feebay. Was at $480 last I checked. I'd rather have the AC 295 that Mark got. More desireable model (rebadged Poulan 306SA) and in better shape.

That's just insane.

Hey guys, y'all excuse me just a minute while I go out to the shop and get my really nice ALLIS-CHALMERS 75A and bring it into the house here and make it a nice comfy bed.
Can't have that little darlin' getting all cold and stuff!LOL

Reminds me that you guys would just laugh your a##es off if I came to a GTG. I don't own a $50k diesel pickup(which is pretty cheap for a diesel pickup), or a pickup at all for that matter. I used to own an awesome GMC, with cloth seats, no less, but I sold it years ago when I still lived in an urban area and had a condo. That truck sucked to park downtown Chicago. My saws would be riding in the back of my Mercedes E55....well, until I got to the GTG, then I would have to hitch a ride out to the woods or hoof it.
