Well so much for the 335 project. Just pulled the cylinder off and the base was broken off at one of the mounting bolts. I guess I found the air leak. I guess I have a parts saw now.

There's a 335 cylinder on ebay right now. Not sure if it is the "real" correct cylinder though.

A 335 is a 335. There all Poulan Pro or PP 335's.

Now there could be there are different "Type" numbers on those though. Seems Joe just found there were both 1 and 2 ring pistons in his, and that would be new to me but again if thats the case they would probably have a different type nuimber on the saw.

I'm pretty sure my 335 has a one ring piston in it.

Heres the 2 ring 335, the first one I did. I only pulled the jug because the EX. port was loaded with carbon, I opened it up and went with permatex moto seal in place of the base gasket. Very impressive saw especially since its a 20" bar.

Heres the PP335 I just finished. One ring here, that was the only difference between the 2. But...the 2, thin ring saw was dated '87 on the molded plastic and the single, thick ring saw was dated '91. Pic was taken before cleaning!

Thanks, I saw that but at $63 shipped and $50 for a piston then I'll still need a coil. Seems like it's most likely not really worth it. I did buy it to learn a little about fixing them up but maybe my first lesson is "how much money to you throw at them"?

Joe you got a type # on those 2 saws? I'm thinking the single ring is a type 1 and the two ring is a type 2?

I'll also wager if thats the case the one shown as a replacement still availible from Poulan would be the later 2 ring piston. Not that its a big deal.

The cyl listed is not a 335 cyl but is a 3450 cyl at least I think that.

There is a seller with a 3300 P/C and that should work no problem, just that the 3300 is a unplated bore. The same seller also has the coil for $15.

I'm assuming your telling us the base of the cyl is broken correct?

Very strange indeed. Never seen one like that and most of these had Gillardinie (spelling?) cylinders which everyone see's as very high quaility.

You can just put it to the side for now if you want, parts useally turn up sooner or later.

Seems the greek also had episien aftermarket pistons for them as well.

I just checked them out when I took pics of both saws. Believe it or not, both are TYPE I saws. The only thing I can think of is the year of manufacture, with the 2 ring saw being made 4 years before in 1987. Whats the year on yours Mark?
Also here they both are. The '87 (dual ring has no label). At first the 335 I just did would not start! Then I flipped the switch to off. Seems some dummy along the way "fixed" the switch". Anyway it runs real nice. Guess the ultrasonic can be considered successful.

Heres a shot of the 3 I have in this series: 2-PP335s and a junky old 2.8 Craftsman:msp_wink:

I'll correct and earlier statement I made. I thought it had one ring. When I examined again it's a 2 ring and is marked Type #1.

I love those c-man saws. I almost bought one of them when i bought my grey 3800. I wish I had just bought both of them now, but ... Wish in one hand....

Mark, that top shelf is pretty sweet. Glad to see your not a Crud light fan... (LOL.. hopefully that can take the place of the jap truck fight...:msp_razz:)

The poulan pro signs..... I have the chance to buy a 2 sided of that same sign for 5o bucks. Anyone want the other half?

Mark, that front office is magnificent. I take it Millers is some kind of North American energy drink.

All that talk of one and two ringed pistons got me intersted in the 3000 I picked up yesterday. Nice little saw with good balance. This one is really dirty but should clean up.

Not sure if you can tell the series by the side decal.

P2261059.jpg

Pulled the muffler and I see two thin rings and some carbon. This saw has been run on 25:1 (or richer) but the piston and bore are unmarked. It is always a relief to find good new in there. Boy this is one dirty saw!

P2261057.jpg

Nice compression and strong spark but if you look at the fuel supply and breather lines in the background you can see why it would not run.

P2261054.jpg

Have not checked the oil pump but it looks like the only issue is a missing retainer mount for the front right AV bumper.

P2261058.jpg

There may be more issues under the grime but it looks like a fairly low hour saw. I was also very impressed with its simplicity. Well designed and great layout. It has to go under the bench for a while but I will post up when it is done.

From the pictures it looks like that saw has the mesh screen air filter on it instead of the flocked (which is good IMHO) because by now the flocking would all be gone leaving big holes. Be sure and really go over those fuel and impulse lines (no tygon for impulse).

I'd pull that cylinder and clean that exhaust port up because you are very subject to carbon scoring with that kind of build-up.

Nice saw Al. I dont have a 3000 yet, but Im looking. certainly is a relief when you pull the muffler nd see a nice clean piston.

Are you saying that tygon doesn't make the right size or it should not be used for impulse lines?

Tygon's not suitable for impulse lines. It can't handle the temps, and is too 'squishy' for the vac/pressure pulses. Factory impulse line, and good high temperature automotive vacuum line are the ticket here.

I agree with Randy that a tygon type line should not be used for a impulse line unless for a short term fix.

They dont hold up to the heat etc, and a rubber line should be used.

Poulan did in fact use a clear line like there fuel line on some of those series and it never held up well at all. I just had to replace one on a 3500 today as a matter of fact.

Edit, I'm a slow typist. LOL

I have now (very recently) started using factory Sthil weedeater gas line for impulse lines on these saws. I know it's almost blasphemey but it is what it is. Black in color, comes in a 1 meter package, very stiff and seems to be a very good sub. I've got a package in the shop and will post a part number later today, don't feel like walking out there at 0530 this morning,

Google is your friend...stihl part number is 00009302803
