hey guys - any particular reason a 46cc poulan frankensaw would be running HOT!!! So hot it melts the plastic on the AF cover. I richened it up a lot and it cuts good in the wood WOT. When I say frankensaw I mean the engine is as it should be, but I cobbled together bits and pieces for the housing and covers. I drilled out the muffler quite a bit on the diffuser inside the spark screen. I opened up the flare on the side a bit. that's all the mods on this one. it started off life as a 2775.

Sounds like an exhaust leak!

Do you have an air deflector right behind the muffler?

deflector is properly in place. exhaust leak may be a culprit since it is a 2-piece. it is tightened up properly and edges don't look bent. it seems like the head is getting awfully hot as well -- no problem feeling the heat through the AF cover.

hell, i'll just run it till it blows or melts the top off.

The line that states "but I cobbled together bits and pieces for the housing and covers" could possibly be your problem. It is possible that the air flow is not working as it should to cool the motor. Tom

true enough... that was my first thought, and with the parts I have it was the best combo (except for the clutch cover, which is a bad joke), but that doesn't mean it is correct.

I appreciate all of your inputs... I'll post a pic later so ya'll can get a laugh.

I picked up a craftsman 3.3 20'' and was wondering what poulan and pp was the same saw. I'm needing a few parts and would like to put some green on it lol. I think its the same as the poulan 3300 and pp325-335 but looking to confirm this. Thanks ahead of time.

I have been hankering for a 5200.

Mike, what was that other Porter you had in KY besides the Edmund Fitzgerald?

I have one .... it's a little beast! REALLY!

They are big and heavy...you don't want one...nobody wants one................:msp_biggrin:
You don't need a saw that runs like that..............:msp_scared::msp_scared::msp_scared: you might get hurt! :)

Wendell .... are you big enough to handle one?

say partner pop the top off and take a pic.... is it missing the thing that deflects the air off the fly wheel???? or is it missing the exhaust gasket???? some of these have a metal plate under the muffler also i beleive not sure going buy memory of pics ive looked at....thats a cool saw i love ones that are beaters ya can abuse and the take it!!!!

probably not. The geometry worked well with my 4200 for 30 years but now that I am old I like the feel of the 8500 better, the extra space between the handles is cool..:msp_biggrin::msp_biggrin:

Gonna have to try an 8500 some day. The 5200 has a very compact feel for 85cc .... my 371XP has a much larger 'feel' to it in my hands ...

Age is only a number! :jester:

Hey guys new to this forum. Recently got a craftsman chainsaw it's supposed to be the same thing as a poulan 3400. Had to get a new recoil side over for it. Can you tell me if i can get some screws for it at lowes or the hardware store. Are they self threading like a wood screw or a standard 1/4 in. Coarse thread & how long. Actually haven't got it yet supposed to be on the way.

How will this saw stack up against a older husky 55. Cousins got one and would sure like to give that husky a run for it's money.

That poulan will run with or out run a 55 any day IMO... as long as it's running right.

I had a few acquisitions over the weekend. Got a Eager Beaver 3.7, an Echo leave blower, and wait for it.... a Poulan push mower from my neighbor. He was cleaning out the storage shed behind his house(first time he saw it had a concrete floor) and found a bunch of stuff the previous owner left behind.

Sorry it wasn't all Poulan gear, but part of it was.

Nick

Those cover bolts are specialty items.
They are fine thread and the head is football shaped. (When looking from the side)
There are some standard sized bolts that will work, but they look like hell to anyone who knows what they should look like.
