Came across a 3400 bow saw. What is purpose of bow saw? How hard is it to convert to straight bar?

Bow saws were mainly used in the South to buck up softwoods. With a log laying on the ground a bow saw makes it easier on one's back plus unlike a regular bar, it reduces the chance of the bar hitting the ground. To use a regular bar all you need to do is buy and put on the bar and chain. However the clutch cover and the saw case won't be flush. You will have an open space between the bar , clutch cover and saw case. Actually not a big deal.

5200 Bow Saw pics

Started pulling the 5200 apart. It looks like it may be a virgin. Don't think the starter cover had been off, until I removed it. Screw heads were still completely painted, with no screwdriver scrapes..Original fuel line was still good, except for a crack where it attaches to the carb. Mud mason nests on the inside of the starter cover. Inside of carb looks good. I'm not positive, but it looks like the muffler has never been removed. There is a strip, with little locking tabs on it, that don't look like they've been straightened and re-bent. Vent was all gummy..:msp_biggrin:

Thats a great looking 5200 Hemiyota !!! I agree, that it looks all original in there. Isn't it great to know that you have been the first inside of it, and hasn't been fiddled with after all these years. :msp_thumbsup: That one shot is pretty telling. Over spray of green paint on the fuel line, air filter etc.

Gregg,

Gregg,

Yeah, and to think he'd considered just throwing it away!:msp_scared:

Need poulan 3450 help

Hello all,
I haven't posted on here in a long time because I have never been intelligent enough to put pictures on to back up what I talk about.

I just purchased a 3450 off e-bay as parts, but the only thing I have found wrong is the circlip is missing under the flywheel side that holds the crank bearing in place. Looks like the saw ran until the bearing shifted and pushed the seal out. I have taken the clutch and oil pump off but not sure how to get the oil pump gear off.
Does it take a special puller ( where can I purchase one ) or ??

Should I put this in the chain saw forum?

8500 and 5200 crankcases

Are they the same? I looked up the part number for the 8500, but my IPL for a 5200 doesn't even list it. I'm sorting through the parts I got with the 8500s to figure out just what I have. I have about 3-4 crankcases, with the 5200 tag, and one other that looks to be a factory replacement.....no tag, and in gray primer......

Does this mean we are fixin' to see a Mastermind meets the Poulan 4000 thread???

Not On Gerry's saw......I do have a 4000 of my very own in route though.

No, just made it "right". It had issues which he corrected. I would have never had them all figured them out. Kudo's to Randy.

Hold up on the backslapping till we see if it can make it through a few tanks. That saw was a challenge to figure out. It was sporting a homemade intake block and base gasket.....the base gasket had softened and caused the base to become warped....and the intake gasket was covering the impulse passage. Now it has new crank seals, spur drive, fuel line and filter, and the squish is tighter as we turned a little from the cylinder base to true it up.

Keep us updated on it please. :)

And I couldn't figure out why it didn't run right! Go figure. Not sure what you mean by "homemade intake block". I'm surprised it would draw fuel with the impulse blocked.

If you need an intake manifold let me know.

Thanks, maybe Randy will be along here before too long and let us know if I should take you up on the offer. I thought the carb bolted directly onto the cylinder. I guess I'm wrong.

Just did a search on the 4000 intake manifold. I see what Randy's talking about now. If he doesn't come along I'll call him tomorrow and ask if I still need one. Thank you for stepping up.

If Randy sent it back to you, you can bet your A S S that it is right!!!
If there was any doubt, he would still be working on it!
