Ill try and post a pic of the rings.

I asked about compression release as a last ditch effort to explain 100 psi compression.

I've noticed on a few older saws 100 psi isn't that bad. I have a Daytona version of a Poulan 245 that runs great and has less compression than that. I'm gonna recheck it just to be sure.
On my Lawn Boy 2 cycle 90 is considered to be okay.

I cant get it to start. I have spark and put mix in through carb....no dice. Set mix screws to 1.5 turns out. What am i missing.

Poulan 4000

Good to see you back, Richard.

How'd that 4000 get under Mark's radar AND mine? Where was it posted for sale?

I saw it late last thursday night on Tippecanoe Craiglist:

18 inch poulan pro chainsaw. Hardly ever used. Used to be my grandfathers and he only used it to trim
trees at his home. Text me and I will send pics. Give me an offer. Asking $100

I left a message that night and followed through. Really lucky as he had just listed it.

I,m trying to get pictures uploaded but am dumber than dumb.

You got a steal, Richard.

There's how it slipped past me ... my searches bypass CL posts that don't have pictures ....

Ted, its probably a good thing you missed it.

You would have got so lost trying to find Winamac, the hogs would eatten you and you never would have been heard from again. :msp_scared:

I haven't lived in IN that long, but have navigation down pretty good.

1) Every increment of 1000 on the country roads = 1 mile
2) When in doubt, aim West and drive until you hit I-65 or US 41
3) If 1 & 2 fail, use the GPS

Put in a new spark plug!
They can fire outside the cylinder but not under pressure. (even brand new)
How much mix are you putting in the carb? You could be flooding it.
I only put a couple of drops (approx a teaspoon) at a time and repeat it 4-5 times.
Sometimes I put it in the spark plug hole to make sure it gets where it needs to be.
Have you checked the piston for scoring? My Univent had over 100 lbs but wouldn't even hiccup.
When you get the muffler off, run the piston up over the exhaust port and put a few drops of bar oil in there directly on the rings.
Have you checked the flywheel key? Sometimes they can break and spin. It gets great spark but not at the right time.

What is correct plug? It had on e3 plug but i tossed that. Piston looks great cylinder has some streaking but no scratches or gouges.

I use NGK BPMR6A.
Mark uses the Champion CJ8Y.

Either will work.
You might also want to turn those jet screws in about a half turn.

I use similar plugs. If your comp is 100, either your gauge is incorrect or you have a ring issue. Squirt some two stoke oil in the cylinder and see if comp increases. 120 should be minimum.

I would have posted something but I have not found one yet for my 3750. I do not know if it is the same as for a 3450. I called the poulan dealer and it is no longer available and not in stock, so the search continues. I pulled one of the small ones off once on a poulan 295 with a two jaw gear puller and it bent the end of the worm gear so I will continue to look or figure something else out.

I pulled the worm gear from my 2775 with the same way as you.I used a 3 jaw puller but i grab the bearing, not the worm gear.As the bearing was coming up,it forced the worm gear to came up as well.Nothing wrong happened.

Once I received the part number with the help of others here I was able to order a puller. So when it comes in then it will be forward on the 3750. Other than a hole in the side of it this saw is in really nice shape.

Well today as a loss. When I got 3400 it fired on a prime. Today I replaced fuel line and filter and rebuilt carb. Now it won't do crap. I have good comp, fuel, and spark - compression is 145 psi. Won't even fire on prime. Put in new spark and no diff. When I tried to clear it got a ton of spray out of plug hole. Is there a certain procedure to start these? Can someone give me their screw settings?

Craftsman 3.7 - I almost got it to start. It sputtered a couple time and smoke spat outta he exhaust but that was it. This has been muffler modded. Tried new spark plug no dice. Someone shortened pull line which I don't get. Checked flywheel and woodruff key is still intact. Still won't fire on prime. Compression is 100 psi.

All of this pissed me off for several hours. I'm really lost....

If you are getting fuel spraying out it is flooded.
I set the carb screws at 1 and 1/8th turns from lightly seated.
You might have to swap on a KNOWN good carb from a running unit and try that.
With 145 psi. the correct amount of fuel and a good spark at the proper time it HAS to fire.
It doesn't have any option.

Smoke out of the exhaust usually signals to me that it is flooded.
Set the partial throttle, no choke and pull until it starts or send it/them to me and I'll get them out of your hair.

........Or send 'em out to me to deal with. I could use a good Craftsman 3.7/3700.:D

The rope was probably shortened because it broke and the fellow just reused what was left rather than replacing it. I have seen ropes on saws as short as 18" before....

And those particular saws are usually hard to start even after a longer rope...

as they have seen many more pulls to get them running when the rope was much longer. Take the plugs out, set the throttle lock, and let the saw dry/air out.

That particular Craftsman 3.7 is a Poulan 3800. Chromed piston with thick rings, and bare alluminum bore. A 3700 has thin rings, a bare piston, and a chromed bore. Still a great saw. Sears used both 3700 and 3800 Poulans as "3.7" saws. Is yours red or grey? What's the model number? It will start with "358."
