Is there anything that sits against the area where the chip is, like a seal or something like that. If so you would have to have it machined again because the weld will distort it.

No, nothing sits against it. It's just the area that the crank spins in. As long as the crank doesn't hit, should be fine. Other side is just the oil tank.......

The 3750 is done.

This is the 3750 that I did some welding on. I have already tuned it in the wood. I like this saw it really runs great. I also removed the base gasket and took another .005 off of the base, did a muffler mod and thats it. The saw works great.

Ran my 5200 today in wood :)

After going over the basics, I put a B/C on and tested er out. WOW....definitley has more snot than dads 8500. I checked the compression, it was @ 170-173 ish. You can lean on it very hard in the cut and it just grunts thru.... I was cutting dry 14-16" red oak....

I have tried to search, but had alot of difficulty, who was the guy that had the NOS poulan bars,
I think they were 24's or 28's. I wouldn't mind making contact w/him.

And one more question, before I make a mistake. Can you turn up the oil pump if running a long bar (say 28-36) ? Question 2) is that a "yes, you should"; or a "makes no difference".

Happy Camper, $50.00 dollar Big saw (.59 cents per cc):cool2:

I will have to see if there are any left as someone else found my honey hole. The short ones have a 26 inch cut and 3/8 tip, and the long ones have a 36 inch cut with a .404 tip. I will be running .404 on a 36 inch bar on my 8500 and will probably have to turn the oilier up a tad, otherwise it is not needed as these Poulans will pour oil off the tip of any bar over 24 inches if turned up past a quarter.

I know the power of these saws and feel comfortable running full comp .404 on a 36 inch bar but than I am up here in the PNW and all we cut are these pitchy soft woods.

I agree entirely. My Craftsman 5.2 oils like crazy ...

I really need you to take some pics of that clutch cover decal if you would!!!

Mike

I'd like to see him ditch the safety chain, if he feels up to it. Bet it might be really impressive then.

This is one of 9 saws I picked up in Butlerville, IN on saturday. Ther are no markings on it and it looks to me like it has a 2 ring chrome pistion, ( it shines like chrome )

I still can't figure how to embed picts!

I believe it is gonna be a 3800 but I can't be sure without a bore measurement.
It could be a 3400 too but either way it has a great chance of being a nice saw.
Some of the guys with a better memory than mine might know without a measurement.

Thanks, Mike

It looks so good I hate to tear it down to measure the bore.

Been away visiting family and picked up a couple of Poulans along the way. The 4200 will clean up nicely and is a good runner. The 245A is actually quite nice under twenty years of dust but I was very disappointed to see it needs a piston. Does anyone know where I can find one?
Also picked up a red 3400 parts saw with good a p/c. Very excited to find it as I have not seen Craftsman saws in Oz before. Will have to put them under the bench as work commitments are pressing but will post some pics when I get to them.
Mark, it looks like the hand guard on the 4200 is the same as on the the 6000. I will check tomorrow and if it is will send to you.

Nice looking saws you have there Richard.:msp_thumbup: I can't tell by the pics, just what model the Craftsman is. The exhaust port opening might be a tad larger on the 61cc saws compared to the 56cc saws. Might compare it to the nice older model 3400 you just got. Maybe can tell from that. I like the wooden choke knob on that 3400!:D Looks to be an early one too. Small screw setup on the rear handle, and the older flat tabs on the oil cap.

Al, It amazes me, the nice old Poulans you come up with down there. I wouldn't have guessed there were that many Poulans in Aus. It is a shame about the Piston/cly. on the 245. They seem to be more scarce than the 4200/5200 ones.
That 4200 doesn't look will take much work. They both look like they will clean up real well.:msp_thumbsup:
I think that 245 is the first one that I have ever seen with a hand guard on.
