XPLRN, I have lived here for the past 26 years. Moved around some before that. But my family has lived around here forever I think. I'm about 25 miles west of Upper Sandusky, and 70 miles east of Fort Wayne Indiana.

I bought a fuel tank gasket, for my 245A from Poulan (order tree) I think it was, couple years ago. Don't know if they are still available or not. Probably be a pain, but I think one could make one with the right thickness of some cork type gasket material from an auto parts store. Along with a little sealer, wouldn't hurt.

Well that's a lot longer than I was in Ohio. I made it to about my 21st B-day and decided that I had had enough of the weather and rusted out vehicles. I remember having acquired a couple of rust free vehicles when I was just out of high school and how great they were to to work on. Just decided that I'd rather live somewhere vehicles didn't deteriorate out from under you....also I can take the hot A LOT better than the cold weather temps.

Thanks for the picture of the cork gasket with the part number. Between that and the great picture from Hemiyota I now have a great understanding of how it all fits together. I'll be checking with Ordertree to see if they are still available on Monday.
 
Yup, I got this "locked up" late model S25DA like that. I pulled the recoil off and forund a screw on the magnet jammed on the coil. That saw runs awesome now.

Thats a great looking late model 25 you have there Joe. That must have been right after this one of mine, when they went to the black upper parts. Only one I have that might be newer, is my S25DA in Poulan Pro colors.

Yeah I will try it sometime, most all of mine are done right now though.

One thing to remember on the 306/245 saws is that sometimes a gasket is needed on the support around the center bolt. Fuel will sometimes make it up and leak around the screw head.

I use a piece of cork that comes from the center of the new gasket, cut it just a little bigger then the center support with a hole in the center for the screw to go through.

Seals it up good that way.

Sounds like a great tip, Mark, as to your suggestion of making/using a gasket around the center bolt. Is the area in the green circle where you are using a piece of the gasket center cork ?? Would possibly a correct thickness/diameter o-ring that just fit around the center bolt work also??

By chance do you have a picture of one of these 'specialty' gaskets installed around the center bolt?

I'm still wondering about the idea of finding a o-ring of the correct cross-section thickness and a large enough diameter to use in place of the cork gasket!?? I like the MotoSeal idea but having a consistent cross-section and removable sounds like a good alternative also. I might have to make a stop at the local Caterpillar dealership as they have a HUGE selection of o-rings that I've searched thru for other projects.

In reflecting back on the above o-ring usage thought I started thinking about the design of fuel tank top. Since there is only one fastener to hold the fuel tank top on and a definite operational vibration factor........has anyone ever had problems with it loosening up??

I put a little Moto Seal around the bottom of the head of the screw to kinda seal it and keep it from moving.

I really like the PP yeller one, and it even has the ring. Very nice collection you there.
 
Here are the pics of the flywheels. One is a WICO, and the other is a Prestolite. Both have identical dogs, but one uses the studs and the other has a bolt.

Today I pulled pawls, studs, washers, springs, flywheel screens, and screen nuts from two Wico XL-12 flywheels. PM me your address.:cheers:

Funny thing about that RING on the back end of the PP25. I have a Poulan service update sheet, that was in with some old dealer IPL's I bought once. It recemends putting the ring inside the handle, so there is less chance of it pulling out and dropping the saw.:msp_ohmy: I tried it that way, but didn't like it. I'm NEVER going to be up in the top of a tree anyway, with it hanging from my belt. I'm to old and fat for that kinda work.

WOW! That neon Poulan Pro sign is a dandy. I kinda like them older signs with the pine tree in the P.
I guess if I had $50 and lived in Pottstown Pa., and had a nice shop to hang it in, I would be all over that.:msp_sad:

Well I am right there with ya I will be 62 here in about another 3 months. I try and do things alittle smarter, so I do not hurt myself. I will tell ya one thing tho, I would rather be old and wise than young and dumb, especially when I was young.
 
was looking for a fairly recent post describing how to install a seal and get it past the shoulder on the crank shaft without tearing it up. can't find it. can anyone direct me to that post? also, should i put yamabond on the seal before installing it in the case?
 
Is that a 69 Camaro at the bracket races? I like the sales and service sign.

Since you brought it up..I've been around drag racing since the sixties and can't see the point to bracket racing. What's the use in fixing your car up to go fast if it doesn't matter how fast it goes? The slower cars get a head start. If they'd go back to class racing I could probably work up an interest in drag racing again...

Not everyone had the money to go fast. Bracket racing was just a way to get more people involved in racing that really could not afford an expensive car. I raced in S. Cal at Orange County International speed way in the late 70's and 80's. When they closed down Orange county I sold everything and quite the speed thing.

What I do to get the seal around a shoulder on a crank is cut up a plastic soda bottle into a little flat rectangle then wrap that around the crank. It will form a smooth ramp over the shoulder.

As for yamabond or other sealer on the outside of a crank seal, I don't think it is needed. The coating on the outside of the seal seems to seal it to the case.
