Anyone looking for a couple of Poulan 3400's? They are both pretty complete and have good compression. Anyone that wants them can have them for $20 + actual shipping. Just send me a pm if u have interest.

Thanks for all the interest, but they have been spoken for. If I get anymore older poulans I'll offer them up in this thread.

I would assume that being a newer series saw, like my PP305 and 3300 that their compression and max RPM's are higher than a 3400 and therefore cut faster.

Bob

To be honest I have never compared the two. But you are right about the 335 being newer with better compression and higher RPM's. I am working on my 3800 right now and it had a squish of .055 when stock. Wow that is alot of room.

Yea, I widened the exhaust port on my 3800 and taking the laborious route and glued a piece of sandpaper to a sheet of glass, and sanded the cylinder base. Took a while and alot of checking but got the squish down to .025 w/o a base gasket. Haven't run it much at all and with new rings comp was 140. Problem is most, no all my saws are hardly ever run here in Texas. They just sit. Very frustrating.

Need some sprocket info please

Guys,

Do any of you know if an Oregon 3/8 rim will fit on a Poulan clutch drum for the 5200/5400? The clutch drum is PN 530048001. I am having trouble finding one from a supplier that will ship to Canada at a reasonable rate. I have found one that is reasonable and price is reasonable but they have to order it and are not sure if it comes with the rim or not.

Thanks

Tim.

I don't know where the ports are ???!!!@@@

larry,
your questions are indicating you may have a severe lack of understanding of the 2-stroke. i'm glad you want to learn but you can't be hand fed. you gotta bring some info to the party before any answers to your questions will even help you.
there's a ton of info on AS and out there in cyber space, you need to access it. your profile indicates you have the capability to grasp this info.
good way to access AS info on porting, for instance, is to type the following:
porting site:arboristsite.com
don't get all twisted up cause we all had to start somewhere. you shoulda seen some of my early questions. some have advanced further than others. me, i'm somewhat competent on rebuilding but never ported. don't have the equipment and not much inclination. really do like old mag though.
study up, listen, learn, then ask for clarifications to further your existing knowledge. just sayin.

Wow I figured with .025 squish it would have at least produced 150 PSI. I guess it is what it is.

I will have my 3800 together tomorrow and will run it this weekend to see how it does. I will do a compression test after I run it. Thanks

The short answer to your question, Tim, is yes. Oregon's site lists the part # as 68210.

Al, I am curious as well, as to how much real world difference that will make to the 3400. If it turns out to be significant, might have to have several 4000 cylinders turned down.;) I take it your not porting this saw, just trying to increase the compression?
By the way, I like your old laptop PC. LOL Good old reliable IBM Thinkpad.
I guess by having a Poulan in the pic, keeps this on topic.:D
Gregg,

Gregg, I have never ported a saw myself as I am just too lazy and hamfisted. I have some nice Masterminded saws for the real world, but when I run my Poulans and other old fashioned saws I do so for fun the fun of it. I am not in a hurry mostly and just run them and dream I am young again. But, I really want a 3400 with a bit of snap to it. I figured an increase in compression might do it. I put a Modifiedmark extra port in the muffler and perhaps I can smooth out the exhaust port a little (though it is pretty big already) but I really don't know what to do with the intake side or the open ports. If I can get it to run with my PP375 I will be happy. If not I am gunna get a 4000!:msp_biggrin:
Let you know how it goes.
And those old Thinkpads - I have three of them. They just won't die.

Hey Nardoo I like your saying, I just run them and dream I am young again. Very good I can relate to that.

I do not have a great deal of experience in porting saws but I have done some and with a degree wheel for timing. What I am doing with my 3800 is smoothing out the intake runner because when it was formed I found ridges on the inside that would obstruct flow. On the intake port itself where the divider is, I just narrowed the leading edge so that the air will flow around it better. The rest is pretty much the same as what you are doing already. Good luck and let us know how it turns out, I will do the same.
