Tomorrow I have to go back to a job to 'fix' the problems the landscrape architect with my job of trimming three dying pecans. He wants me to remove more TINY dead, and slice off the internal shoots/suckers that I tried so hard to save. He wants me to trim it like a live oak.

And this guy is a degree holder, or whatnot.

ehhhhh Just Trim it 4" above ground level and tell him There I Solved the Friggin Problem! Now I Wont have to come Back!

:D

I could be a landscape architect. I'd plant Pin Oaks directly under power lines, White Pines and Willows all around the house and I'd make sure to plant a stinky female Ginko right in front of the entrance to the house.
My sister recently asked me what to plant to keep the neighborhood kids froom cuting through and trespassing on her property. She was thinking about an Arborvitie hedge. I suggested Hawthorns and Poison Ivy as a Hedgrow. She wouldn't go for it. C'mon Sis, at least consider some Barberry...

Be sure to ask Guy for advice on how to deal with the landscraper.
No need to ask; here it is! You can put down the violin, skwerl, we all get anti-tree specs dumped on us. Contract climbers can respond to idiotic specifications the same way that this consulting arborist does:

1. Document tree's condition with measurements and digital images. If declining, recommend root work to invigorate.
2. Cite the literature on pruning that advises against overpruning interior growth. Show all this to the property owner.
3. Submit to the local landscrape architect regulatory board, and file a complaint for unprofessional practice.
4. Find out which diploma mill the dummy went to and send them the same info.
Will all that change the world instantly? No. Might it make a dif in the way LA's and U's do business? Yes (it has here). Is this a lot of trouble? Maybe, but it cannot hurt to reread the lit, and look at the whole tree. Is it better than just complaining? I think so.

5. Best and easiest, though you can't easily do this one if think you have to follow orders: Show the LA in detail why his/her way is wrong, and if they don't change to a tree-friendly strategy, refer them to the YP.

AS for thorny hedges, I like hardy orange, Poncirus trifoliata.:(
