The idea behind a safety can is it allows the contents to vent. They do leak like sieves, but will not explode.

Throw one in a fire full of gas and all youll see is an occasional poof of flames. Thats the can venting off excess pressure. Dont ask me how I know this.

Well, we were at work attempting to get a fire going, wasnt going to well. We started looking around for something we could use to get it going and noticed one of those safety cans in the back of the truck, leaking like a sieve because it was 90 degrees out and the sun was baking it. We all looked at each other and we could tell what the other was thinking.

We got one side of the pile going, downwind and tossed the can in. Then ran like hell thinking it would blow up...never did. Just let off pressure every once in awhile, and certainly did get the pile going.

Everytime I hear about people filling gas cans and the can goes boom I think about
2 things. It happened to a friend of mine. The second incident happened during a
vacation in chicago. We were down by the lake front at Meigs field. An old caddy
with a fur dash and curb feelers pulls up about 9 people pile out and set up for a
cook out. The guy starts spraying BBQ lighter fluid in to his trunk.
I look at my friend and say “ this might get a little interesting”
Anyway the guy lit a bbq grill in his trunk. Friend and I back up til we are no closer
than 200 ft and wait and wait and wait and no boom. Sometimes DARWIN isnt
ready for you.
