Is there a list of which older stihl saws are pro saws? When I hear Farm boss I think Ranch/Farm saws not pro saws. Is the 038 Farm boss a pro saw? I am looking at acquiring an 038 magnum but I have run across a couple 038 Farm bosses.

I would love to learn more about older stihl chainsaws, any good reading material out there or if some of you experts would like to educate me I would be grateful. Thanks, Matt

There have been several threads on this over the years, the search function should locate them. While many even numbered saws are considered "pro", this is not always true (think 018/180, 051, 075).

I don't think there was a 038 farm boss. 041 farm boss yeah, 029 farm boss yeah, 024 wood boss yeah, 028 wood boss yeah, and 018 mini boss yeah.

Don't get too hung up on the marketing side of things (i.e. "Farm Boss"). The FB label has been used on several models over the years. Also, don't focus on getting a "Pro" saw either, get what suits your needs, despite the peer pressure from many folks here on this site and others.

The primary difference between an 038 and an 038 Magnum is displacement; 61cc versus 72cc I believe.

As Quido Salvage noted, the search function is your friend. You will find no shortage of information. Good luck!

I have three stihl saws already a 660, 028, 271 but I just feel the itch to get another older pro saw and like the power to weight ratio of the 038 magnum, do I need the saw, no, do I want the saw yes.

Hold out for a mag or get a super and put a oem 52 mm topend on it and of course get it ported

The only Stihls I have now are an 038 Mag an an 034. They require very little work to make them get up and talk.
The old 044's were one of my favourites.
I think husky/ stihl bashing just shows how little we know, but it's still good entertainment.
I always wondered why Sawtroll seems to depise the Stihls?

You will genuinely love an 038M! I bought one in 1998 used from a saw shop owner here whn we still had logging. The owner was vouching for it. I actually went in with cash in hand to order a full wrap 044 M that day when he turned me on to the 038M. I checked it out, was impressed, asked around because I was new in town, everyone said his word was good. I bought it and loved it! All the way until 2006.

In Aug 2006 I went to SE Washington on a fire assignment. It was cutting season back home and all my sawyer stuff, chaps, saw, wedges, chains, tow chains, tire chains, you name it, were in my truck back home. The truck was stolen.

To this day, I cuss that person only for that saw having gone away. I've recovered and moved on truck and equipment wise, but the loss of that saw is felt to this day!

If you get it, you won't be let down!

It seems the Stihls are harder to tune by ear than the huskys. Maybe because of the thicker muffler. My 038 is a gas pig so maybe I should invest in a tach.
