I'd say it says a whole lot more about how easy that wood is to split not much about the axe design. That wood would fall aprt with a shingling hatchet. As mentioned by many others, hardwoods do not just jump apart like that stuff does!

As an experienced elm hand splitter, I hear that.

I got a black powder wedge that would make any sized wood from hickory to elm just jump apart but your neighbors would probably never speak to you again, ever! I have seen a box wedge plug up with hardwood knots tight enough that 48 tons of ram pressure cannot push them out. You got some elm splitting vids, we all would love to see them.

No, I think they peed in them...:biggrinbounce2:

And there is plenty of hard oak and other hard nasty wood here in the west...
I have some eucalyptus in my yard that is pretty darn hard, it's harder than oak! Mostly I'm working with white pine and doug fir for the house I'm building, but if I need to slab up some of that eucalyptus for flooring, I might do that.

Most of the oak out west turns into firewood as it's not straight. It's mostly valley/live oak.

Kills me when I see folks cutting up great looking trees into firewood, when they could build with them.

I'am a fool w/ money I would wager even Doug could not get a axe to do any thing more than stick in the wood. Doug even showed his face I would like to put a face w/ some of these comments to see if we can conclude anything that may help someone from sounding not too smart. Foot in mouth here. Any way bash away maybe we are blessed w/ such straight and clear grained wood.

Humor me some more. Thats the spirit laughin all the way to the bank. Now thats stuck in head but only the first line. My face hurts now from smiling.

Come on guys, you know what this forum's thread is about by now, if you don't want to read about splitting wood, stop reading and posting in this one. Go back the the mix ratio or husky/stihl debate. You guys are beating this subject to death. No wood to cut?

Stirring the pot, No trees to cut about right. Leaving Sitka for Nome and the trees there wash ashore from Russia. But GOLD laying on the beach and oozing from everywhere I cant reveal any more. Oh heres a few minutes scratching around.

Fiskars is the best splitting tool ever (according to some). I'm going to post my video of me splitting a log for six minutes with a Fiskars and then when I can't get it to split I take two whacks with an 8lb maul and split the sucker into perfect pieces.

All that aside, here is a picture I post every once in a while on the hearth forum on the proper way to use a Fiskars:

I find its easier to just use a wide 18" tire. roll the tire over to the round that needs split throw it over, it and whack away. If the round doesnt fit in the tire its usually big enough to not fall over right away when i start taking splits off of it. if you can pack the tire tight enough you can actually roll the splits over to your truck bed. Biggest time saver to axe splitting is being able to ID the pieces that will take numerous whacks, and not waste time on them just noodle em right off the bat.

I used to be a big fan of the tire. My biggest issue is that every once in a while the piece(s) get stuck in the tire. Tire is a bit bulky to move, but it is a great feeling when you split and the axe bounces off the tire for a nice rebound. You should give the rope/bungee cord a whirl, I think you would like it even more.
