interesting thread,,,

there are seven pages of replies, some for and some against his efforts... and in the chainsaw forum!!!!!
i wonder what kind of responses he would get in the firewood forum??
maybe there would be more positive responces, if noodling doesn't come to mind so quickly...
personally, i find oak one of teh easiest woods to split, and i've had some "yard cherry" that almost laughed at noodling,, it just kinda unscrewed, it was so curly.....

Oak is usually easy to split if its out in the forest because it grows straight and long... freestanding oaks on the otherhand can be a knotty nightmare

I used to be a big fan of the tire. My biggest issue is that every once in a while the piece(s) get stuck in the tire. Tire is a bit bulky to move, but it is a great feeling when you split and the axe bounces off the tire for a nice rebound. You should give the rope/bungee cord a whirl, I think you would like it even more.

I gotta think moving a tire around is less of a hassle than lining up all the logs and strapping them together with the bungee. You dont even have to carry the tire... it rolls lol. The tire also keeps the axe off the rocks/dirt. I dont see anything that would stop a really good swing with your method

i get all my wood from teh township tree crews,,, mostly 80-100 year old trees next to the curbs, so its not all straight, like close growing forest wood...i just got 2 loads of locust this morning, we'll see how that splits, but this is getting off topic......

Tire vs Bungee

Your right about the tire working as I was a big fan of doing the tire for several years. The good tires come from your local drug dealers. 28" low profile. Drug dealers are actually good for something :msp_biggrin:

I have since done roughly 30 cord with the Fiskars, bungee and rope. I split on concrete. I would know if the blade hits the ground. Never hit the ground yet and I have never damaged a handle yet. It is in the technique. The handle stops the blade from going to far. You can see it in the video.

The point of the video isn't to show how fast wood can be split, but to introduce a different way to get the job done.

learn something new everyday

and all this time I thought talk of splitting wood with fiskars was making toothpicks with your wife's scissors...they're tough scissors after all...

I'll have to think about that rope & bungee trick...not sure the handling is any less...might save frustration of the round falling over when the maul is over your head?

Cheers!
