Well i'm sure most of you know me from my other posts dealing with Florida and New York tree work. My question today is, am I too old to start climbing. I'm 24 and have never done it before. I have no problem with heights and am really interested to get up in the trees. Dragging brush and lowering limbs is dandy and all but i yearn for more. I keep second guessing myself wondering if i'm worth a ????. I would like to be able to diagnose trees and function beyond the age old parameters of "boss points...I cut". Any insight would be most helpful.

Tony

P.S. MB..if and when you read this. The wife and I are fine and I have decided to return to my home state of NY. I only hope that there is a tree job waiting for me when i return.

NY, I just got into the tree biz last year. I was 25. If I can do it, you can too. :) The only advice that I might be able to say is, read everything you can and ask lotsa questions.

Oh, and remember K.I.S.S., while you learn.

You're at a great age to learn diagnosis, becasue it takes many years to get good at it.

As for climbing, you have at least five decades left, if you take good care of yourself.

Tony age is just a number. I got back into climbing at age 25 after a divorce. I went from sitting on my arse all day in a hanger and flying to busting my hump. I say as long as your in good health and have a strong desire to be the best you can be then go for it. I didn't get good until I was about 29 after Meeting Jim Roach and learning all that there is beyond ArborMaster.

I'm with the rest of the crowd...you are plenty young to begin climbing. I was older than you when I started, so you can get better than me easily ;)...it won't be a challenge at all :D !

I don't know. Twenty four is pretty old. Let me ask this, are you using a walker yet? because if you are then you better think long and hard about the carrier change. If not, and if you really want to climb, then give her hell. I bet you could do it.

I dunno
I started at 14 on the power lines, actually 12, but didn't climb until 14.
By 24 there wasn't a man around who could touch me, still can't.
24 seems old to me, puts you in the 30-40 year old climber/groundman catagory.
I'm 33 and company owner. Have had 50 year olds working for me that didn't know as much.
Maybe its just me, but it's sad to see old guys climbing for younger bosses.
I highly dispute the assertion that a new 24 year old man can start climbing and have 50 years of it ahead of him.
Most guys I know can't do it after age 45-50. Too hard on the body unless you fly booms all day, but any girl can do that. We were talking about climbing, right?

I don't mean to pee in anyone's cherieos, but harsh facts need weighed aong with the rosey outlook he's being spoonfed.

Some guys can do it, most can't. Respect the ones who can, and the ones who can't and get out on thier own. Disdain the ones who can't but still hang around getting in the way.

Many starting at 18 have too many internal distractions; and have not learned to be careful or other things that transfer to tree work.

i think 24 could be considered fairly ripe in that examination; a step further would be dependant on what else the 24 yr. olde brings to this table with him/her. Tree climbing when kid, gymnastics, physical training, heart, desire etc.

Hey, I resemble that remark.

Why is it sad? I enjoy climbing, I have no interest in being a company owner. If you gave me you're business, I'd sell it.

It's fun working for a younger boss, their naive and east to manipulate in to the kind of employer you want.

Another point, it is more important what kind of shape you're in than how old you are. I can climb and even drag brush with the best of them, and all day long. I get a charge out of some young punk weasing and grabbing for his cigarettes after a short pull up a hill, while I stand there without so much as a raised heart rate.

You also said a climbers done after about 40. Does that mean you, the best climber in the world, only has about 7 years of climbing left? Shoot, you must not take care of yourself.

Your never to old, I was 27 when I got out of the Army and started climbing. I have a 23 year old groundie that Im teaching to climb now

Sounds familiar except you started at .50 more an hour and are 4 years younger...must have been inflation:p.
