Piston Refitting Question

I am not certain what the price would be for a small cylinder like a saw, but here is the companys website. http://www.usnicom.com
Also keep in mind that there is more to replating a bore than simply applying the plating. The finished product must be diamond honde to close tolerance with the correct peak and valley profile.

I might have to check into that nicasil got a whole pile of cylinders with damaged chrome. That would fix my old saws right up. Let us know what you decide to go with Mike and how it does.

I would be willing to bet that echo does nbot use chrome plating. Chrome has real issues with adhesion, flaking, premature wear, corrosion, and its ability to retain lubrication.

I thought I saw that somewhere and indeed it shows up on the Echo website where they describe their engines:

"the cylinder is hard chrome plated to reduce wear and extend life."

Base Gasket

I'm putting this old 024 back together again.

Should I coat the new base gasket with anything?

Yesterday afternoon I sat out on my screen porch and reassembled my old 024. Went back together pretty easily. I wonder if the new Stihls are easier or harder to work on than this early 1980s job?

It's nice to sit in an old lazy boy and work on a chainsaw in your lap. You can't do that with a motorcycle or truck.

I probably should have replaced the piston and all the other stuff some guys suggested, but I couldn't really justify sinking big bucks into this old relic. There was a little more galling on the piston than I had thought. For good or bad, I "sanded" the galled areas a little bit. Then I cleaned the parts and put in a new ring, gasket, and rubber hoses. It might be running yet today.

Should I run a little extra oil in the mixture (40:1) for a while?

Max, why not run it at 40:1 forever? I have been since last year and have had no increased fouling or negative consequences using anything from OEM mix oil to MX2T.

Hey Ben, I`ve been told that I can buy small quantities of dye for the MX2T from a company called Sandy Bray Labs, do you know anything about them? It sure would be reassuring to look in the fuel tank and see a color other than gasoline. My experiment at 40:1 has gone so well that I am also going to 32:1, especially now that I plan to cut the oil with a small amount of dye.

I couldn`t find a Ratio Right cup around here, even at the bike shops, so I went to Auto Zone and bought a Sea Sense mixing bottle for $2.99. It has ratios from 24:1 to 100:1 and quantities of fuel up to 6 gallons. I also like it because it has a cap on it to keep it clean while it rides around in the toolbox of my truck.

I havent heard of them Russ. I do know a guy that got some dye directly from Mobil. A little bit goes long way as you dont have to use much. If you order some let me know and I might be interested in getting some at the same time. BTW I knew you would like mx2t. Nothing burns cleaner with a properly tuned saw when ran with it.

Hi Ben, you`re right about the MX2T, everything looks extremely clean. I`ve also wondered about the lubricity and popped the jug off an 026 I`ve been running on it, seems good here to when unscientifically examined in this manner.

I also thought that I might score some dye off Mobil but to no avail. I didn`t think it would take much, but apparently I didn`t speak to the right guy. I did however express my disappointment that the oil is so close in appearance to ordinary pump gas. The guy was kind enough to give me the name of a few companies that would sell to me by the 55 gallon drum, LOL, and then Sandy Bray came up. When I get around to finalizing the details and ordering I will let you know.

The first no was in answer to the question about sealant.
The second no was posted late Sunday, so it may have been me,
but I was severely digressing then, so I do not know. But I have
many sinister enemies that wish to discredit me, but as always,
the best answer is "no".
But I am digressing now.

What does your sinister look like? Is she as pretty and petite as an alpaca? Did you really score 1650 on your SAT?

Your incredible friend, Russ

Are you guys serious about going to 40:1 or even to 32:1? Is 50:1 too "lean" a mix in your opinion?

I'm using the Stihl "High Performance" oil for the first time. It's colored...

The 024 runs and runs nicely. Its old problem of not idling is gone. It started right up and in a few minutes I had it tuned and idleing correctly. The leaking impulse tube evidently caused the idling problem and probably caused the piston to stick too.

It will be interesting to see how much life this old saw still has in it....
