I use a digital angle gauge (per BobL's great threads). If you have a pic, I would like to see how you measure the depth gauges. I do have a set of calipers but could not think of an easy/consistent method to do it.

Learning to file is a challenge. I hope to spend more time working on it this winter.

I know I posted this a few times, it is my (self) ported 044 with 28" RS off the roll in oak.
Watch the transition off of the dogs ........... RPM's increase and she 4 strokes as a result of less load
Also, when the bar is close to the end of the cut, less work is done and RPM's come up and she 4 strokes again - while still cutting, with about 25% of the bar working to cut.
I admit that it is a little rich, and can pick up a little more power if the carb was leaned out slightly (on the high side), but I like a work saw to work and stay cool, so rich is how I roll !!
Saw is tuned for 32" B&C, so when a 28" is used, it is going to be a little rich

Just subtract the flat steel thickness from your reading and you have your raker depth

Up to you ................ your call, but if you want to, send me your chain, I will file and set rakers and send back to you so you can "see" the angles when holding your file, and see where you need to go.

Please don't get me wrong, I am no Matt or Dave, (those 2 are just unreal) but if it helps you out, I am all for it !!!

Mopar ain't no magic in rakers I think everyone goes thru the shorter faster stage, just some don't learn as fast to shallow back up. I run 95% full Skip w/rakers set at .025-.035 When I grind'em it's usally .035 so it works for 3 to4 touch ups, if they check at .025 or more I call it good. Also I run long bars on my small saws so those chains usally are ground at .025. I don't see any real speed change just less grabbyness. After grinding or filing I hit the front corner 2 file strokes on about 45* angle front to rear at 90* from the bar (round the front) This needs to be done because the cutter rocks as it engages the wood and the raker corner if left as a corner will bite in adding to the grab, chain tension and cutter angles all effect the amount of rock which should be kept to a minmum. My 45* is only a production easy way of getting it done on work chains. Study new quality chain angles, raker shapes, raker depths these are good guidelines and when you can match a new chain for speed and smoothness and know why, you'll understand the things to try that will make the kind of work chain that people will say where did you get that chain. Read Philbets chain threads lots of good info. Sorry to drag this out but hope it helps. Ken

Thank you for the offer. I have several in a box waiting to be shipped to Treeslingr so that should get me back on track. Its not as much of a knowing what to do but executing it (then replicating it on every cutter). I knew going in that this would be a challenge to learn from youtube and forums.

No excuse for the rakers being too low (I did think it would self feed better with the lower rakers).

Ran that 046 today in some 20" oak. Man does it run! Stock 066 won't touch a mastermind 046. Maybe different with more than 28" of bar. Today I ran it with a 20" bar and 8 pin rim.:clap::rock::clap::clap::rock::clap::clap:

Thanks Mastermind, you da man! :D

The chains will be well taken care of then !!

The forums and you tube will give you an "edge", its up to each filer to "polish their edge" as best as they can by repetition, trail, and error

No excuse necessary for low rakers, everyone does it, and once its done once, no need to do it again !

I would love for you to tune that saw in the wood, then take another video - back on that same log with a good chain !!

Piss revving video?

Por favor

I didn't get any video today. It was a little complicated, had electric service pulled to accommodate. Had all four trees rigged with ropes. Service was off for under 45 minutes. (The mrs would be cranky if she missed days due to any chainsaw action). Anyway, point was the emphasis was on quick and safe.

Dude, eyes were bugging out at the speed, power and sound of the 046. Even the lineman complimented the saw. Said "that's a mean sounding saw". I am very, very happy with the way it runs. It runs so good I felled, limbed and bucked em all with the '46.

And just for the record, I'm holding off on piss revving it till its had a half dozen or more tanks through. Then the piss revving really begins.

I did have one guy that I never could make happy......out of about 700.

...wrong truck stop maybe....???

Sorry Randy, I was just reading the Chris Wells thread and all I keep picturing is 'truck stop Annie's ' goin about their work.. I'll never be able to get fueled up at the big rig stop again without looking for the "working" class women.

Back to porting 460's :clap::clap:
