Husqvarna has a sweet "arborist" climbing saw called the 338xpt. I'm partial to these little Huskies because I've had several 334's in the past. (yeah I'm getting 2 MS200T's)

Their normal version of the 338xpt comes in 39cc's. However, they have a "Cali" version that comes in 45cc's. I don't completely understand the situation with that, but think it has something to do with emission control standards and for Husky to keep it easy for them, they just loop-holed that situation by just using a 45cc engine.(correct?)

Anyway, have any of you actually used both models, and if you did, find that the 45cc actually made a difference or can definitely tell the extra power?

Your feedback, like always, is much appreciated.

Thanks,

i found the mall gutless and poorly balanced.

the 335 cali seemed to have the best power of all of the Huskies though.

Don't much care for the Cali's...stock anyhow......with the same carb and porting, they are slow to rev up, and sound as if they're missing.....

Port the mufflers, then they work OK...same with the 38 cc 338......the Cali may have a tad more torque, but are no faster.

Hello gentleman,

I'm not sure if I'll go with the Husky purchase because I will be getting the MS200T's. I've always liked the Husky 33_xpt series as they are comfortable to handle and does what a climber needs.

Thanks a lot for the replies.

The extra 6 CCs's are likely to compensate for the power lost through the more strict emissions controls the saw has. It may even have a CAT muffler to meet CA emissions.

I am a die-hard Husky fan and I used a 335XPT for a little while and wanted to chuck it in the river! I hated that thing! I think tophandles are an area where Husky lags behind other MFG'rs. I have a used Solo 633 and I absolutely love it!

I have one and I like it.
When the 334 and 335 first came out, I hated them. But the 338 cali is a good saw. Stock they seem to give up a little chain speed to the 200T but have more torque and are not near as cold natured and finicky.
My only complaint is the air filter clogs very fast. But then so do all the other top handles with a forward position carb.

Few saws rival a 200t in performance. My Solo 633 with muffler mod can hold it's own with a 200 in the smaller stuff. I modded a 200 muffler for a friend and it is an absolute weapon!

Only ran a 335 once, and I hated it. I always was fiddling with the carb trying to get it to run right, the 338 might have some of the 335's bugs worked out. I'd buy one if they weren't so dang expensive, if I was gonna spend that much I'll just buy a 200 and be done with it.

maybe you need a carb adjustment or update.

mine works great in the cold or when the saw is cold.

Sounds a bit lean on the L screw setting, but if you've got it at the end of the limiter you're kinda in a pickle, unless the saw is out of warranty and you trash the caps and set it where you want to.

338xpt

takes a 14'' bar nd runs mint starts one pull loved it ever since i got it for 150 dollars with a brokin gas tank which i fixed
