I may be in the wrong area on this forum. If so someone please help me find the appropriate place for this. I just know this area has regular participation.

So my frustration, my neighbor is having the logs taken off of her land. No big deal other than I'm a little worried about her plan for cleaning the branches up.

ANYWAY, the "logger" is here working today. I walked out to look at what they were doing and noticed that there is an older guy operating a skid steer giving directions to the two younger guys. One is pretty much standing around and the other is operating the saw.

Both guys have the same PPE on -- running shorts and a T-shirt. :jawdrop:

I watched the saw operator for a minute to confirm this. No other PPE at all. Of course I don't ACTUALLY consider running shorts and t-shirt to actually be PPE.

What are the OSHA or other regulatory standards for this? Is there someone I can call and have them drive by? This is absurd.

Yup, there is someone you can call, ME. As you can see from my vid I fully agree with you, yup I wear PPE all the time. The number to OSHA is 1-800-KIzz My Azz

I made these for guys like you, enjoy the vid.

And clearly you don't have a strong reading comprehension and retention rate.

You missed my post where I said I know I overspoke initially about this and that I wasn't going to call anyone but that I was frustrated about this and shot off at the mouth.

And GOOD LORD guys, are those of you that are calling me a busybody just that non-observant? I can't help but witness what's going on RIGHT NEXT DOOR (even if we are separated by large yards) and am I nosey because I notice what people are doing in an activity that interests me?

Don't you guys notice other people's trucks or lawn equipment or Harleys or whatever you are interested in? Maybe I'm just observant.

I am sure that some of you who are criticizing my opinion have taken an unpopular position before. That shouldn't mean that anyone with a different opinion has a right to come along and call you names. I guess I'm saying, what happened to the mature approach of "agree to disagree without being disagreeable" (or without being a jerk)

Clearly we all differ about the use of safety equipment. I'm just sorry that people who choose to not use it affect me. I'm also sorry that the legal system still affords them the right to sue the manufacturer.

Yeah, it's easy to whine at each other over the internet. You were fine to vent a bit. A lot of people read about 2 sentences of a thread, form an opinion, and fire away. Don't take it personally, it's the nature of fora. Regrettably, I do it too sometimes.

this is the problem today.

the gov and society has everyone conditioned to think everyone elses business is THEIR business.well it isn't! if it isn't affecting you, don't worry about it.everyone should be more worried about helping their neighbors instead of snearing and judging them from around a corner and behind a fence.maybe you should have pilled on your PPE and went over there and done the job for her.

i cut in shorts and sneakers on the job all the time.come to me on my job and tell me what to do and wear and not to cut one handed with a top handle saw and you'll need PPE that isn't even available yet.

sorry but this nosey crap really gets under my skin.

i sure miss the good old days .

After I got cut I learned more respect for saws (ppe wouldn't have helped me), and I do one hand, even though I cut my wrist last year. The other day I was falling in just my jeans, I was carefull, but also wrong, cause I knew better and did it anyways. So you would beat someone for telling you to wear ppe, interesting, couldn't you just tell them to f-off, thats what I tell people that get in my face for killing trees, they usually leave right away. I remember the good old days too, walking on forms 30' up, in jeans with no hardhat or even a shirt, concrete pump hose in one hand, beer in the other.

There are a couple of reasons I would be concerned, for one think about this, every chainsaw injury becomes a statistic, and who uses statistics?

Politicians use statistics to put new laws into effect. I'd rather use the existing laws and regulations regardless of how stupid they sometimes seem than wait for more laws to protect the ignorant. I think we have enough laws as it is.

Insurances companies look at statistics and base insurance rates for various high risk businesses. So if you carry insurance on your employees and business then this does affect you or it will down the road. Same goes for the land owner, even if the land owner says these guys have insurance she is still a possible defendant in a lawsuit if one of these guys is injured or killed while working on her property. Especially if the landowner doesn't insist on personal protection.

If you operate a chainsaw in a professional capacity this kind of unsafe activity will effect you. When accidents happen the media never looks at the fact that maybe it was just some weekend warriors bidding a job for beer money, no in the media eye it is automatically a pro and the industry comes under scrutiny, then politicians and insurance companies take a look and then laws are made and rates are raised and and and......

I don't agree with forcing anyone to use safety gear ON THEIR OWN TIME, but if you are doing a job for someone then you should protect yourself, your employees AND your customers.

What I'd do is talk to the land owner and let her know that she is liable as well if someone is injured on her property, maybe she'll have a sit down with the fat guy and at least get some safety glasses on those kids, nothing worse than a blinded guy weilding a chainsaw at full throttle.

I agree with your comments. Your thoughts are similar to what I was trying to express somewhere in this thread. I appreciate your compromising attitude. And for what it's worth, I did watch one of these kids use the saw half blinded the other day -- he had crap in his eye twice while operating the saw.

UPDATE FOR EVERYONE

The fat guy left the two kids (who I found out this morning are 18 and 20) with the skid steer and the saws last night. I was out with the dog and noticed another skid steer being towed in to the neighbor's yard after a long period of silence in the woods. I walked back into my woods a little and noticed the tires of the skidsteer in the air. Yes, they flipped the machine on it's roof.

They driver was fine and the machine is in operation today. Just an interesting site to see.
