EHP, Here's a picture of that saw of Rolins running 3/8's. He sold it to somebody from back in New York. Haven't seen it since. 22 tooth 3/8s sprocket. Check out Melvin looking on!

hello dennis
i have ran that saw
it also had a 30 tooth gear
we put 1/2 in on it but to all honesty it has no power
on 16 in. popular any of my 3120 strokers killed it so he bought one of them and a rotax which he onlys runs on wood over 18 in because the bar on the 3120 onlys cuts 18 in
the chain is 59L .063 they make .080 also
it is the same width as 1/2 in just as strong the tooth is higher andseems to really cut and smooth
3/8 is fast also but you have to use a big gear and i know of one guy out here using it and in 20 in wood he is right there with the rotax's
i use to believe that you didnot need a big gear on these bike saws but now the times are so fast you have to
the rotaxs have to have a 13 tooth now even in 10 by 10
the chain is made by oregon it was made for the slashers
just came out but make sure it is the L type ok

EHP, what are you running for a sprocket and chain on your 3120 stroker. What does it cc out to with it stroked. In western canada, [Can-a-log] rules, runs a 140cc open class. Are these Marsell Vincent saws or yours? Who's building the cranks? Have heard a little about some 3120 & 088 back there, but don't know alot about them. Tell me about yours. Dennis

hello
marcel has retired 3 years ago
i took his course on porting saws
the 3120 stock has a 42 mm stroke
the stroker has 46 mm stroke 130 cc now but you have to change the rod if you make many mistakes
the stock rod is quite weak also when you warm these saws up donot pin them or you will have a basket case
gears we run are 12 or 13 tooth
rpm is for a saw that runs both stock app. and pipe is 13100 to 13250 in the wood a pipe only runs 13700 in the wood
port is higher on a pipe only
the cranks are done in quebec
adrien bernard is the company they also bore and redo the jug for me
where we are making power is the fuel
alcohol plus 20% nitro
no gain above that to run more nitro run have to lower your compression to much to do any good nitro has a octone of only 45
we also make are pistons with 47 mm wide skirts to have big ports
tranfers ports there is 4 of them
we go outside the jug and come back in obove the intake port we use a stuff like jb weld to put the runner up there
most stuff like jb will not handle the nitro and breakdown
we have to use a chainsaw carb by the rules sowe use the 3120 carb on almost everything it modifieds nice
the 088 you cannot mod the crank it is only a 2 piece crank
i made a stroker 084 it has a 47mm stroke had to build oneside of the crank so i could but a pin in
have not thrashed it much yet but i will in the new year

when john comes up i will have him take some pictures so you can see ok i know you guys are thinking that i am talking out my a#s but once you see then maybe you will believe
we also cut most of the ext. port out to put a alu. block back in its place
the stock port is not big enough and now we can make it round
much easier for the pipe to mount now
the yamaha you were talking about is forsale i think
he has it in the corner of his shop
i do all my own work to get machiniest around here to do what i want is hard because if they are good they are always busy so i bought my own stuff
i am going to do a crank soon now that i have the tooling

EHP, would like to see some of your work! Some of the nerds would too! I also had to buy machining tools to learn how, and spent alot of money trying to get some things done. Usually had to wait for them to do it, at there convenience also. That's what bothered me the most, and then if things weren't right you had to start all over again. One thing I can say is I'm not a real machineist, because I've recked enough stuff to prove that, but I've improved! A better welder for sure. I have built some nice pipes for chainsaws and motorcycle saws. I do have a machineist friend that helps me on any of the technical stuff. We rebuilt our Dansco type sprockets on the 500 Honda's I have, and improved them so we have know problem going full bore into the wood. Before that we had to ease in the wood and hoped the chain didn't blow off. Those are pin sprockets, but we're working on a paddle wheel sprocket similar to the Rotex, but one piece. Sounds like your working on chainsaw motors alot. I do, but like the motorcycle stuff better. A little less modification on parts, cranks, cylinders, pistons, etc. I did build a 137cc stroker honda for Penny Halvorson, but shes been hurt for awhile now and I heard she hasn't run it much if at all. Haven't got any feed back on it.It was legal in can-alog rules but I don't know in your area. It ran a 16 tooth 3/8s in 20" wood. I might build another one for myself. Keep the posts coming and get John to take some pictures. Thanks Dennis

Hi chainsaw nerds, I was out making some sawdust with my 346KD stock appearing saw today with the high compression oil cap and the quad finger ports
Anyway the 346KD charmed the tree right off the stump.
John

hey john
did you get any snow today
our power was out for 6 hours again
i guess that is what you get for living in the great white north
but you know sometimes i think we must be crazy to live here

Hi Ed, we only got 6", but we only have 1 degree of frost, being so close to the Lake. If we had to shovel what we got in the last 3 days we would have had two feet of the stuff, which you may have gotten. I talked to Dozer Dan tonight and he said he would be more than delighted if you can come to the 346 Fest. He thinks he can beat your 371. Dan like you, is from the boonies, so I know you two will get along well. Plus I need you around just to take the spotlight off of me and to keep Woodsjunkie and Rich Hoffman from speedbagging me.
Loggin's & Loggin's Logging.

DC, please post a pic of Penny's saw. I remember that saw at Morton although you did not run it. As I remember the saw looked great and assume it runs great also.

Hey Robert, get out here as soon as you can! You were always a better cutter than I, with regards to racing, and why wouldn't you be? But really, you have to learn how to slice and dice properly. I hope some day soon Robert, that Gaston Dupriere can be your lift partner. Ed might be able to put that together.
John

137cc Honda stroker

Rotex, I never took any pictures of that saw, I just forgot too! Then I sent it off to Penny and kick myself now! Annette took a picture of me running it at Squamish, BC, but from behind and you can't see the saw very well. I'll see if I can find it, but not much to see. When I ran it at Squamish I had a 14 tooth 3/8s sprocket on it and it was geared way to low, so I changed it to 16 tooth and it made alot of difference. That was the best looking and handling saw I ever built. Got many complements on it. I wanted to keep running it and playing with but she wanted it, so I sent it to her. The first run with it at Squamish was a 3rd place, but I cut 2 1/2 disc's in a 2 cut race, I cut out on the up cut half way up and had to recut it. We cut 22" wood an I only lost by a second, so it was fast but still to low geared. Thinking back on it, it was a cool little saw, maybe I will build another one. Dennis

If saws won races on looks alone that little saw is a winner. I'll call Rick&Penny and see if she wont send me a pic.

Trust me on this for you that know DC's work...this saw looked great.

I'm interested in Ed's statement on running tubes from the crankcase back up to above the intake port on the cylinder. This sounds a lot like "9-porting" that was done on the old Clinton, West Bend, and Power Products engines in the 50's. I'd like to do this on my thin-ringed Stihl 064 but was thinking about running the tubes into the tops of the transfer ports using aluminum tubing that decreases in I.D. to increase velocity. Are you guys also making any full circle cranks for the modern engines? thanks, JJ

yes i have full circle cranks here
but i donot use them
they fill my crankcase up to much
full circle works with gas but not with alcohol / nitro mixture
i can make them run fine but down alot on power
on the tubes i am not sure when you are coming back in to the jug it sounded like you were coming back threw your transfer port
that may work but are you not going to fight the charge that is coming in normally

Hey Ed-

I mean by coming into the top of the transfer I'll run a tube from the bottom of the crankcase, outside, up the outside of the cylinder and punch it back into where the top of the transfer port is inside the cylinder. This would be a lot like the external tubes the builders used to run on Mac and West Bend engines only those engines already had the fittings for it anyways. I'm doing this on a "woods" saw, that I use everyday for timber falling. As a man's skill with the saw increases the need for the saw to cut faster grows, I can make more money everyday with more cutting I get done, and the slow part right now is the motor. I hand file the chains square chisel with an aggressive backslope, modifyed tooth, and modifyed raker- so the chain is as aggressive as modern saw chain can be. Now I need the power to drive it.

Ed,
Just a question, What is your last name?? and where are you located in Ont. ? Do you have saws that run the NY circut?

Thanks,
Chris

yes i have saws there
paul pfenninger stroker is my and his little 365 is my but sad to say we donot do bussiness anymore
stumpy has one from me but if you now stumpy it is hard to keep him in parts
i have sold some stocksaws there also peg eng. sold wally a 088
o last name heard

hi jacob
what saw are you running
i have not tried your way of doing transfers tobe honest
with todays saws i cannot see that working well plus you are not opening the tranfer area this way but never tried it before so how do i know if it works
