Cant see what I am looking at! So you left the lead?

I removed one branch that was attached slightly farther out than the new leader, and one that was attached about 15" closer to the trunk, but both that I removed had their leaf area farthest out from the trunk. The desired effect was to reduce the moment maximally at the base of the branch, while retaining 3/4 of the leaf surface area of that branch, and while keeping a natural shape. Mission accomplished.

I would have taken the biggest of the ends out there off of the branch and left the rest of the other small ends. It looks to me like you took off the 2 biggest of the ends and left the smallest end.

I would would definitely have taken down that vertical one off of your branch in question. That too would have relieved a lot of weight.
To expain it lightly, I tort of don't like how the branch is in a big 90 degree configuration. How I would have done that one, Soiset, would have left it looking like a branch instead of a manufactured thing. Know what I mean? :-/

If you look at the photo in the op, you can see that it actually looks pretty natural this way. The second set of pictures are taken from an angle that exaggerates the eccentricity of the branch that I left. It might also be that the removal of the branches farthest out will lead to some epicormic shoots closer in that can be trained into proper branches, which would then allow the removal of that eccentric branch. It's a pecan, too, and they grow all wonky like that, anyway.

FTA, you are absolutely the last person who should be giving ANY advice on how, when, where, or why a tree should be trimmed. Do the world a favor and sit yourself on a tall pine with a sharp point until at least a minute quantity of tree knowledge penetrates your cranium.

Soiset, nicely done, and nicely not over done.

I would personally take down the entire tree. Remember before flaming me that we have some serious winds and snow loads. If it can hit a building..... it will.
