I decided to rehab one of the covers on the 460 with just what I had around the house. So I buffed/scrubbed for about 20 minutes with one of those green sponge/srubbies, an SOS pad and some Bar Keeper's Friend. All the built up dark grime was gone when I was finished. I mean gone. And of course once I dried it, it was all chalky/white/faded.
I thought about throwing on some car wax but didn't want the hassle, and with a woodworking background realized how nicely oil sinks into porous material. So I grabbed an old cast-off bottle of 2-stroke mix oil from the garage, put some on a soft rag and buffed it in. Looks good as new, and not all shiny like car paint that's been waxed. A little sheen to it is all.
I just did the air filter cover because it was the easiest to remove. Next I'll do the filthy, grimy, darkened cylinder head cover, and will take before, during and after pics.
No need to spend money when you already have everything you need laying around the house. The thrifty among us will like this route.
Only drawback was when my wife, attracted by the scrubbing noises coming from her kitchen, walked in, put her nose in the air, said "that was a brand new scrubby pad," and walked back out.
