For the money you guys are spending, I got an Echo CS-310 with a 14" bar on it. Runs like a house afire, no clutch rubbing, no fuel line issues. Do these really run that much better?

Eh? Where did you find a CS-310 recon? They are mid-200 bucks new, the Ryobi recon is $100-110. Doesn't look like anybody is spending much more than $30 on parts.

The Ryobis are what they are. There are better saws. But if there are better saws (with warranty) for $100, let's hear it.

The "problems" that these Ryobis have are actually minimal. The most serious is an overly long fuel line in the tank and a light weight fuel filter. You don't have to fix it if you're willing to just run 1/2 a tank and re-fuel.If you're mechanically inclined (or even if you're not),pulling the filter and line out and cutting about an inch off, then weighting the filter so it stays at the bottom of the tank is really all you need to do.
The muffler mod consists of drilling a few holes, most people can do that without too much instruction.I've even heard of guys that buy new Stihls and an extra muffler to mod.
The safety chain that comes standard isn't much good, neither is the green chain you get standard on certain new Stihl saws.Replacing a safety chain is pretty much expected these days (if you expect to cut any wood).
Is it worth it,the time and trouble that is,well what do you have more of,time or money. You can spend more money and hopefully have a dependable saw,or spend less money and put a little time into it and hopefully have a dependable saw.
I don't mind putting a little time in to fix a few glitches.
I wouldn't be too put out if my $110 saw blew up tomorrow,I would order another one.(They will run out of them one of these days and then the fun will be over.)

I got my Echo new for $199, needed a cheap saw for cleaning up brush at my house, and my 10 year old Craftsman had bit the dust. I think you guys have convinced me that this Ryboi would have been a better deal, wish I had known about it then.

Cliff - how about an update on how the Ryobi is doing after replacing the coil!

And - any progress gang on modifing the air intake/

The saw is running flawlessly since the new coil install, but we haven't had a chance to do any back to back testing.

I can say for certain that the little Ryobi will smoke an Echo CS-370 or CS-400, and will be very close to the Husqvarna 435.

I haven't had a CS-310 in here yet, as the CS-370 is about as small a limbing saw as I'd want to own......Cliff

Well this has been an interesting thread.
I never thought anyone would like this saw very much but I
bought one back in 06 anyway. I thought I would hang on to it
for 20-25 years and see how much of a collector saw it becomes.
This has never been started. Its new in the box / carring case.

That is a nice setup, leave it as it is and order one of the re-furbs to play with. They really are quite a saw for the money.

I contacted redmax and the coil on the gz4500 is rev limited also.
earlier in this post it was mentioned that perhaps the non limited coi loff a redmax 3800avs may work, anyone checked that yet?
Cliff, have you dismanteled your bad coil to see if there is any hope of modding a coil to eliminate the rev limiter/
Food for thought !!

I used my new 10532 yesterday and found it as you report. What a pleasure to use such a light powerful saw! the chain was a carlton N1, 3/8" full skip low profile .050. After looking at the chinese HD chains, I ground the safety bumps off. The saw never bogged and was smooth enough. I plan on getting some Baileys comp loops. I did have trouble with the chain throwing, perhaps the somewhat narrow ryobi bar or the skip chain?
