Ambull : We call 'em choppers mitt's. Back in the 70's, guy's on the woods crew, that were doing the cutting and feeding the skidder, were called "chopper's". The independent finger was for the chainsaw trigger. Don't ever remember my hands being cold, even hooking up chokers in deep snow. We treated the leather every morning with neatsfoot oil before going into the woods for the day. Warmest things I've ever worn.

Always thought Navy boot camp was conducted in Great Lakes

It is now, but there used to be three Recruit Training Commands in the Glory Day's of Ronald Reagan, and building back up to a 600 ship Navy. In addition to Great Lakes, there used to also be RTC's in Orlando and San Diego. I went to San Diego in 1987, 21 days out of high school, on Father's Day. Was the best gift I could think of. :ices_rofl:

Pex will expand when frozen and go back to it's old shape without cracking. Bad thing is if you do want to that it you can't use fire (torch) or electric current and you have to be careful with a heat gun. I'm slowly changing everything over to pex too. I use sharkbite fittings for temporary, quick, and torchless fixes. They work on pex too. I use them on my OWB until I get everything plumbed where I want it. I keep a variety of sharkbite fittings and have helped out myself and lots of neighbours when the stores where closed and they had water issues. They do sell 10' lengths of straight pex too. CPVC is a pain to work with and can be messy. I keep a box of crap to fix anything.

Well, I am looking at the pex more seriously now. I really like the manifolds where you can shut off individual runs, which means I can *add* individual runs as I get to them. CPVC would be cheaper, but the idea of the pex being more burst resistant..I like that. I'll check out the local plumbing supply guys, they treated me good before and put up with my noob questions.

I am trying to not hate plumbing...really trying. If I had ground clearance to get to the pipes I could fix them and insulate them and hang them from the joists and run some sort of heat under there..but that would require jacking the house up, trying to wiggle a backhoe under there to dig out for some room, or just jacking the house up a few more cinder blocks higher and new foundation, or removing all the kitchen and bathroom flooring, most of it, and all the stuff on top of the flooring, finding someplace to put that stuff... bah.... just bah...

My Gf is not amused right now and is giving me serious grief as well, #$%&&^$##$%%^ I got five buckets of water in the bathroom for flushing but she is still kvetching about it. Sucks, just when you need some moral support...like it is my fault it wasn't fixed in ten minutes...

Anyway, sorry for the derail, this is really the only place I got to go ask questions, where I know I can get some answers, and a lot of you guys have so much experience with hot water plumbing because you got OWBs etc. And I have to get this fixed before the next real cold snap hits or I'll lose the cold water as well.

Is this something that you can get on a regular basis? Could make you pretty popular, if you could figure how to ship them!

This one was a bumper that wouldn't hold air , not sure how much a new one is but I don't think it's cheap .
Wait till I get it tested lol

Nothing nautical is cheap. But, if these bumpers have a life expectancy, or get damaged in certain locations, and you can find a source that scraps a bunch and send them to landfill, you might find yourself a small 'green' sideline repurposing them. Around inland lakes, we don't often see them larger than 6 to 8 inches in diameter.

Sounds like you did provide a fix to me. "Pour this in the top when you have to flush."

Hang in there Zog.

You can put the pipe foam insulation on real easy too. PS, sharkbites are real expensive but are handy and quick. I wouldn't do much with them but use them in a pinch and they are reusable over and over.

+1 on the pipe insulation and even heat tape. That's a real popular item up here for folks that have crawl spaces under their house. Ranks right up there with a block heater in a vehicle.

Shark Bites are che sweet!!!! They work very nice!!

That sucks, they shut down the two nice weather locations and keep the nut freezing one open.

Perfect. I was wondering why no one could come up with an expandable pipe. Visions of creating a colony in space and still have bursting pipe issues.

I know exactly what you mean. Ex-wife used to do crap like that all the time. I was supposed to know how to fix everything because I'm a guy. Never mind the fact she doesn't know how to sew, is a lousy cook, etc.

I'm hoping that pipe foam insulation works. Just wrapped most of my pipes with it. Plus I have a heater on down there.

Sharkbites are awesome! Just used some to fix the plumbing in my shower. I wondered how they worked so I pushed them onto a some scrap copper pipes. started to freak out when I couldn't get them off since they're not exactly cheap. It's pretty simple to disconnect them though, no real need for that special tool.

I feel like like my plumbing skills are getting old as fast as my auto mechanic skills! All my pressure lines are copper, all the drains are ABS or PVC. I understand we are no longer allowed by code to use the ABS here. Don't know why, it has held up great (did house in 86).

When my Dad was in the reserves, before WWII, I think they knew the war was coming and tried to get them ready. They sent him to VT in the winter, and TX in the summer. He never returned, or had anything good to say, about either location! Perhaps it did help prepare him though, he was in Battle of the Bulge, and that was one of the coldest German winters on record.

FYI: while the PEX will survive a freeze, its the metal joints that will fail. PEX has its advantages, but its not the end-all answer.

first off I live in a 1983 mobile home that we bought new. the plumbing was the great polybutilne cheap crap that was sued with a win for the home owners ! after receiving our "FREE MONEY", from the law suit we replaced all the plumbing with pex 3 years ago! all the fittings were easy to use and assembly was a literal snap! the best thing that happened to a not so good plumber mainly/namely me..... with the open, snowless winter were having this winter so far our pipes have frozen 2 times already! water running at night and still freezing the pipes means I need to wrap them in foam ins. yet? still with them freezing 2 x there is no leaking of any sort! the info states that pex will expand 1.5 times it's original size! proof is in the no water puddles ! PEX,i will replumb with it again if ever needed......

steved stated "FYI: while the PEX will survive a freeze, its the metal joints that will fail. PEX has its advantages, but its not the end-all answer." don't know if there still made ? but I used the pex=plastic brand of fittings valves an connections.. the only metal in them were the star snap/lock rings!

Sorry to derail the plumbing discussion but today I finally ordered the final part that I needed to get my Mac 2-10 back in usable condition. Just need to rebuild carb with new duckbill valve and put it back together. Then once she's running we can go through the trusty 65.
!! lol besides enabling your hearing better as well !! them mac,s will clear any obstructions that may be in your ears.... lol
