Scrounging Firewood (and other stuff)

I need to get pics for proof of this score.

One of my son's lawn customers wanted to pay them to haul away their wood pile. It is mostly pine with some balsam, hardwood, and aspen. He wants to buy birch to replace it. I said you don't need to pay us to take it away and we'll make it disappear by Friday.

There is over 4 cords in there.

Too bad I didnt have any hardwood to sell him.

Mate, 3 hours of wooding and my old mate Roscoe is cooked and he's 48. And that's with me doing most of the work.

You do need to investigate the weight loss as a matter of priority but do not stop wooding, whatever you do.

I'm beginning to suspect the weight loss is actually a scale malfunction. It showed I had gain 5 pounds overnight. I seem to be right on my normal 184 give or take a pound.

No chainsaws today. Wild wind so I stayed home and am catching up on some backlog jobs. Mowing, chain sorting, new 'wood wagon' I picked up at a North Forty a few weeks ago. Had it all toggeether except the last bolt didn't have the needed locking nut. Of course a metric. I've had the replacement almost a week I just miiigght be able to squeeze that job in today. Already stacked 1/2 cord on the truck for delivery in the morning. Finish loading the truck first thing. Loaded rack high with eveery sticked stacked, not tossed, it holds just short of a cord.

Playing with my knob today

I painted it black and cleared it three coats then used a paint pen to fill the pattern .Sanded with 2500 paper then cleared it again
Not perfect but it’s better than the Chinese junk that the pattern is silk screened and wears off in a few miles

True. I am still surprised at my state of health. I come from a tribe noted for their longevity but to still be able to be out there wooding is unusual.

Always think positive and stay in shape.

I do not drop start "cold" saws. I'm much better at starting them when they are on the ground and my foot is in the handle. I also do not use the compression relief on a "cold" saw. IMO, that defeats the impulse line to some degree.

If the saw is "warm" I usually use the CR and drop start it, usually one or two pulls depending on how long it has been off.

I'm a foot in the handle guy too. I use the CR to save my shoulders.

My dad's solution is to call me over whenever he cant/won't start a saw. I don't need a smaller saw lol.

My neighbor was doing that to me all the time for his chainsaw, pole saw, string trimmer and blower. Now I do most of his work for him when I can.

Maybe the answer is to get a smaller saw with a compression release valve. They sure do make starting a saw a lot easier.

Well, it doesn't rain but it pours. Now my internet connection modem is tits up. It had been dropping out fairly regularly but then colming back in a few mintes. Yesterday it quit and won't come back. In addition to being 88 I also have poor hearing (aids get fitted next month) and have real problems understandong women. Ssooo...I call the fix-it number and get the usual phone tree. Much problem understandibng what they want but fight my way through until I am talking to, yep, a female. I explain the hearing problem but she trys asking me to see what lights are sworking on themodem. l I finally understand that and the next question was "what color" Ooops , color blind. I exsplain that I am 88 and totally computer i,lliterate and 'PLEASE SEND =ME A TECHNICHIAN, we are only wasting time this way. Her reply? "goodby" click.

Anyhow I am in the county library using their computer with a 2' wide screen I'll chcck in about every 2 days.

Still have parts soaking in cleaner. I rebuilt the carb but don’t have a kit so it may or may not seal up with the old gaskets.
carb is a Till hs205a/215a and searching for a specific kit is not coming up with much. Lots of kits that look exactly the same, however. Suggestions?

running now…idles, revs
much of the goo in that screen was due to really old gas and attempted starts/runs by the previous owner and me stupidly believing he had put new gas in it. Oops… basically cloaked out the cyl.
saw and 30” bar/chain is 23.4# which is amazing for a 77cc. My 500i is 23 with a regular 28”.

need to find brake parts…

what keeps the clutch from spinning off other than torque and the cover?

I don't use decomps, a good number of my saws have them plugged.
One of the reasons I want to get the 268 popup pistons for the 372s, very easy starting and still great performance. I may not need that as much today, but it's nice to have what you need before you need it when you do.
I don't always drop start a saw, but when I start a saw I typically do .

I can pull any of mine over still but I use the cr for the sake of the starter assembly. Blows my mind that the 5400 I just picked up doesn't have one. I bet it could bite hard!!

I just use a little gasket maker on the old gasket if it's not terribly gone. Make sure it works with gas though.
As for the kit, put up a thread in the chainsaw section asking about it and someone may tell you which one it takes, and may have one. Once you know which one it takes you can place an add in the trading post, for the carb kit and brake parts, or you could just sell it as is.

Did you weigh the 500i without the brake parts for an accurate comparison, just saying

The only saw I've had an issue with it on was a husky 55 closed port, totally destroyed the starter. I honestly thought it was seized up, then I got it to turn by hand a bit, checked compression and it was 180 exactly. Mean ole girl, and the compression release was meant to be used lol.
I've removed them on many saws, just another place to leak air.

2+ days of sonic tank in degreaser to get it clean
the muffler…quite a bit longer…
I’ve gone through probably 2gal of cleaner.
