Shortly after I got my Ruger No 1 in .257 Roberts I was woodchuck hunting with Remington factory 117 gr. round points. This ammo was used as I didn't have my Huntington custom dies yet and hadn't reloaded anything for the gun. I noticed three deer along the fence line on the far side of the pasture and wondered if I could get one at that range. After a while I noticed a woodchuck maybe 75 yards to the left of the deer, also along the fence line. I could only see the woodchuck when he sat up. On one of those sit ups I took my shot. At the shot the deer looked around and then went back to browsing. I had no idea if I hit the chuck due to the vegetation... With that I walked across the pasture towards the spot I visually marked for the chuck. I was over half way there before the deer went back into the trees. I found the chuck... it had no head but I found it. That answered my question about being able to get a deer with the gun at that range. Distance... Best I could tell by pacing it off through the brush and rough terrain was 350-400 yards. I had sighted the gun in for a point blank aim out to 300 yards on woodchucks and held a bit higher knowing it was further than that. That shot was as long a shot as I could take on that farm. The gun is accurate even with 75 gr Sierra HPs that I typically used for woodchucks.

Firewood related question. I have a Heatilator builtin fireplace. Several fireplace inserts have come across CL that looks promising. I'm considering getting one and converting it to my existing 8" double wall pipe. I know nothing about inserts. Is there a offset from the fireplace flue to the existing chimney and how do you deal with it?

.308 is in the table as I have one already, just it's a semi so not allowed to hunt with it, but i have a proclivity for collecting calibers with the same parent case... so 7mm08 would fit in with having a .243 and .308 already. 6.5cm is just the low recoil aspect for the kids starting out.

It varies where I hunt, happy land I can be over the field or in the woods, most the public land I hunt is heavy woods and some overgrown fields from clear cuts that were left to nature. Have a hard time hitting a rabbit with the 12ga let alone being confident a bullet will hut a deer in it. So whatever I grab for the kids needs to be a bit universal, I wouldn't let them take any long shots at this point, but I don't want to handicap them once they are older either. (Nit that I need an excuse to buy more guns lol)

I agree, although I typically have my 338wm loaded w/200gr sst bullets. Haven't messed meat up any worse then any other 30ish caliber rifle

Were having the same issue around here. I'm fearful the woods behind my place will eventually get sold off and turned into a development. Although a farmnwas just sold off and they are putting up chicken houses, so may be people won't want to be around that smell....

You guys are lucky to be able to use rifles during deer season. In Mass it is shotgun only. I can say that my 12ga slugger to the lungs dropped my doe dead in less than 100 feet.

This is the first year IL has allowed some sort of rifles for deer season. Not high powered rifles. Some other sort; I don't understand the restrictions. Now how stupid is that for those who use rifles in flat land congested areas in IL?

My stove insert has a top flue. I used a 90 degree adjustable elbow that I turned until I had about a 130 degree fitting. My damper plate was removed from the fireplace. I made a new one out of 1/4" steel. I put a 6" hole in it for my stove pipe. Between the elbow and steel plate I have a few 6 inch pipes to fill in the gap.

A buddy of a buddy called and asked if he could drop off a poplar tree they were hired to cut down at a local golf course. I said but of course !


This is by far the largest poplar tree I've ever seen ! Free is free and I said thank you come again when they left. He said they had a few more local jobs lined up and he'd keep me posted. Can't argue with that !

Scrounged up a Valby CH150 hydraulic feed chipper today for $2300 with new belts and blades. This one spins at 1080 instead of 540. It weights a few pounds more than my present Valby CH140 hydraulic feed chipper.

In MY state, some major studies were done, and they proved that the bullets from the shorter straight walled cartridges didn't fly any further or ricochet any more than shotgun slugs do.

My experience firing both, I agree with their findings, and that's why they legalized the less powerful straight walled cartridges.

That's not stupid at all.

Correct, where I grew up and Uncle Mike still lives. It’s shotgun only. Where I live and hunt more time than not, it’s rifle.

I even gave my cousin (his daughter) my slug barrel for the 870 so she could use it.

When I was younger I had a nifty Marlin bolt action shotgun with a fully rifled barrel. That was the most accurate shotgun I ever saw. It would shoot saboted slugs good enough for head shots at 50yrds…..

My pal who lives in rifle country now too and I often kick the idea around about going back to our old honey hole for an old shotgun hunt again, but we never do

Yea, like mine! It started with bow season in October, early November went to crossbow, then on the 18th rifle up at my cabin and at the farm, but shotgun down here, and on 12/11 it will be Muzzleloader!

Rifle used to be only allowed in the Catskills and Adirondacks, but now it is rifle in most of the State except a few Counties that are either Shotgun or Archery only.

The wife thinks I'm crazy with changing up what I'm hunting with all the time!

So, I need to make sure the bow, crossbow, rifle, shotgun and muzzleloader are all ready to go before the season opens!

I will admit that my Remington 870 with a Hastings 24" rifled barrel and cantilever scope mount is a real nice setup, especially firing the Hornady SST saboted slugs (a 50 cal 300 gr saboted slug at 2,000 FPS). (It is what I took the doe with this year).

But, if I were allowed to hunt with a rifle I could handload instead, I would.

Nuts enough that I own 3 No 1s.

I have an H&R Trapdoor Springfield in 45-70 that is fun... I use 405 gr. lead RNFP cast bullets in it. Factory ammo shoots so differently that the gun doesn't print on paper as the sights run out of adjustment.
