You guys hunt funny back east.
I'm sure we have a far higher density of hunters to hunting space available to you, and also some stupid rules.

For example, up at my property in the Catskills, they have a "3 point" rule. A deer must have at least 3 - 1" points on a side. Try counting the points on a deer that is moving through thick woods ... it is impossible! It allows large-beamed deer w/o points to re-generate!

If you are moving, 90% of the time you will push the deer to someone else.

Also, our woods are usually predominately hardwood trees, which I'm sure is much different.

A joke for you that also helps to explain it!

A NY Farmer is on vacation and meets a Texas Rancher. The NY Farmer asks: "How big is your spread".

The Texas Rancher says if you get up early in the morning and point your truck due West and drive all day long, at about sunset you will reach the other end of my spread".

The NY Farmer responds: "That is a shame, I used to have a truck like that too".

Yeah, I have 75,000 acres and that is considered small in Wyoming.

When my dad and I go out hunting, it's too easy. We don't even shoot anything anymore. We just enjoy the wildlife now.

It's a huge departure from when I was young and took my little 4wheeler out with my .22 and shot anything that moved. I joke with my dad that I had my hunting bug out of me by the age of 18.

My mom forbid any wild game in the house and we had to donate all wildgame to the salvation army.

I just never developed a taste for wild game.

Now I let the neighbor run cattle on the meadows to keep the grass in good shape. I just go out and pick the cow I want every year.

However, we do some waterfowl hunting on the lake...I will shoot a geese or two each year.

@snobdds that’s hunting there, the farm…

Well we sit in blinds or stands and just wait for the deer to walk out at dawn or dusk

Get steady and take your shot

We don't use stands or blinds out here.

I use to drive a 1988 Toyota 4x4 at the ranch and just hop out when I saw something. The last time we took an animal off the ranch was about 15 years ago when the old lady was bugging me to take her hunting. She took both of these standing in the back of the old truck while I drove. The wyoming way...

The other thing that just baffles me is this notion of "hunting camps". We don't do camps out here. My dad and I built a cabin about 10 years ago in the middle of national forest on some land we own. My dad likes to hunt in the forest so we go every year. It's just him and I and the dogs. We don't have a bunch of people come up. I wouldn't know what to do if a bunch of people wanted to come up, but everyone just does their own thing here. There is enough national forest where everyone has enough space for their own camps. It's just totally different out here...

Yeah, they're a pretty neat bird to have around and at the same time can be a pain in the ass. Especially when they start banging on your aluminum gutters.
One time cutting wood near a tree stand a woodpecker was banging away on the ladder of the tree stand. Surprised it didn't knock itself out with how it was pecking away at that ladder. Sometimes it fun to just sit and watch stuff like that.

I'd take well cooked(not well done) venison over beef any day. I know who's handled it from the day it was killed. Now if I could go pick a steer from the pasture that'd be different.

Try sitting all day in a stand in 20° weather with a 20 mph wind blowing in your face. That'll test your ability to handle suffering.

You could lose your gun/bow, your truck and the animal if you did that here in WI. You need to be 50 feet off the centerline of the right of way.
Nice animals!

Hunting camps here in WI are a result of the short 9 day rifle season. People had their 40 or 80 and went up for the whole season.

This book is a great read if you're interested...Screenshot_20241120-175831_Google.jpgThe deer season used to be a religion here. Schools and businesses shut down, churches had special deer hunting services before the season and communities had big opening day meals for all the hunters in the area.
Unfortunately that's mostly gone by the wayside with the long seasons and the fact that everyone is so busy. There's also lots less deer since wolves were reintroduced in the 90s.
