I did the same, almost always had to grind off humoungouse mushrooms.

Some I have had to cut off, since they were too large to just grind off efficiently. It is an important safety issue. Some of the overhanging metal can be quite sharp and cause nasty cuts. Some pieces can go flying off when struck. As a practical matter, they also prevent penetration when the head gets down to the surface of the wood.

I was so proud of my work and couldn't wait to show him. I still remember his speechless reaction - not good.

I think he did which is why he held his tongue - the two reactions, disappointment and appreciation cancelled out each other. His silence may had a little pride twist too, proud of his work but too proud to admit it.

I swing an 8 pounder and use standard wedges, only time I use one of those 4 way tornado things is to finish a split in stringy wood.
