Hello again. A week or two ago I asked for some help on splicing 16-strand climbing line. I was trying to find some better instructions on the net that contained several pictures to walk you through it. I apprecaite all who responded.

Last night I made some time to sit down and actually try to figure out how to do it based on Sampson's online instructions ( http://www.samsonrope.com/home/pdf/16-Strand-Class-1-SPLICING.pdf ).

So onto my question:
Step 3: Pull out the core back to mark C. Pretty simple step, you now have the core and the cover separate from the end back to mark C.

Step 4a: Pull out marked strands - seems simple enough.....pull them out of the cover braid so you can cut them later as you are burrying the splice (makes a nice taper).

Step 4b: Here is where I miss the boat completely. "Tape end of cover tail and attach fid to cover end of rope." It sounds like you are just taping the fid to the end of the braided cover. It says nothing about what to do with the core yarns. Are they just sitting out there...if so I cannot seem to figure out what to do with them later as it seems like they are just left sitting there sticking out at Mark C (doesn't the core yarn actually go into the eye splice?)

It seems like you would attach the core yarns to the fid along with the braided cover.

So anyways, if any of you wish to elaborate I sure would appreciate it.

Much appreciated,
Brian Cooke

Brian- this is exactly what you do. You attach the fid to the braided end, and just ignore the core strands for the moment. Using the fid push (or pull, depending on your fid type) the braided strands down through the hollow you've created in the rope, clipping the pulled cover strands the moment before they are to be buried (creating the lovely taper).

Eventually, the braided end will meet up with the core strands. This will happen at mark at the spot where the core strands come out of the braided cover. Here, the buried part of the cover remain inside and run past the core strands and come out mark D. (That's the tough part sometimes, depending on the weave of the rope.)

So now, from mark C to D, you will have double the amount of rope inside. Half of it will be the original core strands, and the other half will be the thinned out cover strands that you are burying.

Soon you'll taper both both of the ends that are now sticking out of marks C & D. These taper will kind of feed into eachother to create a smooth, unnoticeable transition from the new core strands (which are actually buried cover strands) to the original core strands of the rope.

This should do you good for a while. Let us know how it goes

Well it worked......

It took a while but I managed to splice my first 16-strand line last night, thanks a bunch for the info guys. My hands are sooooo sore, should have worn gloves (or used some sort of tool) for more of the steps.

The hardest part was getting the line tied to the fid small enough so it would pass the core when I was pulling it through. Persuading/loosening the tight rope with a hammer worked very nicely.

I think what I was getting hung up on is the fact that the original yarn core does not go through the eye, I just assumed it would.

One lanyard down & one to go, thanks again,
Brian

16 strand

Hey guys, I went and search back to some info for 16 strand splicing, but still confused...I have an old Neolite 1/2" braided 16 strand that I am trying to splice. On Samson's website, they say to take out the core strands from mark 'C'. Either I am totally dumb or just missing something, but I don't seem to have a core, can that be? Or do they mean something else. I don't know, anything would help. thanks
