I like a 24 to 26 inch bar (skip) on 71cc work saws, give me a 20" (full comp) for racing. As far as what you can do to this saw at home, there is about a million threads on it here. If you are afraid to change the port timing or squish it, you could always widen out the exhaust and the transfers a little bit. A duel port muffler will help allot, you can buy one or build one. Saws are simple to mod once you figure out what your after, just don't take it too far on your first time around.

Ignore the first part and whatnot I'm resurrecting an old thread here. Will a 044 pull a 32 inch with a sharp skip chain without being modded in hardwood? What about 28 inch same chain? I'm gonna run a 3/8 7 tooth if that helps. And I might muffler mod it sooner or later.

Hardwood would prolly be pushin' it. Like I stated earlier... mine will pull a 32" bar all day in softwoods. Never used it in hardwoods.
