I remember seeing where someone said the 1300 coil was a good idea on the 461 to get rid of rev limiting. I don't agree....

I recently used a 461 coil on a poly flywheel 066.......hot damn. The helped that old girl. :)

OK, here is where I went amiss

And here is where they changed it again.

Sorry for the mixup guys. I KNEW I had read that the 046 "upgraded" to fixed timing somewhere...

yea I seen his add...wish I had the money...he said it had a 1128 400 1309 coil on it...that must be nla because I have no info on it...jj is the man.

Ask Wiggz how much stronger a 460 runs with the older coil (1309) over the newer coil (1314.) He said it was a noticeable difference.

We bought four new 046s when I was on the Hotshot crew the day they came out- September 05, 1996. Those are good running saws. We had them on the crew for about five years...

so uhh .... how can i determine exactly which coil mine actually is ? What do i look for ...

And .... is there a better coil to modify this ?

Yeah the upgrade didn't work. We replaced many ignitions on later 046s under warranty as a result of this...You have to have the timing curve to compensate for the flex in the poly flywheel at high speeds.
The 1303 and 1305 coils had high rates of failure.

The 1300 coil on any saw with the poly flywheel will reduce the upper limit RPM and will also lower the RPM range of peak power.

Just try swapping one off another saw. If the problem goes away, you found it. Or you can order a new one at the dealer. They are expensive.

Oh I have absolutely no reason to doubt you...I just couldnt find any info on said coil and it shows nla from steal...wish I had the scratch to buy your saw

The price of 3 leg 046 coils on eBay just quadrupled.

Not really...most ebay seller don't have a clue on the ignitions or even know there's any difference in them. The last two I bought were just labeled as "Stihl CDI module."

Just to muddy the waters even further, there was a short run of SEM modules made for Stihl during the whole 1303/1305 coil misery, with no numbers on them at all but with the same shape as the 1314 coil. They are very aggressively timed and make a great running saw but have very high rates of failure.
