Mine like to kick back a bit, but I wouldn't say it yanks the cord. Definitely likes to be started a bit differently. But once you figure it out it actually works great. And I have two. One stock one ported. The ported one has more compression and has a slightly stronger kick
ported eh .... you do that yourself ? Does it wind out noticably higher with the additional airflow ?

It shouldnt have any more compression , unless you shaved the block , or bottom of head which would be a bear

Your rep is against seafoam because thats digging into his pocket .... of course hes going to suggest buying HIS product they sell ... no duh

Seafoam is a decarbonizer , says on the can , big letters , and its for 2 cycle and 4 , so someone is giving out false statements if they tell you its harmful.

I used it , works great , removed plug , shined a light into the cyl , and could read the writing on top of piston... so id say its pretty decarboned.

Does it still yank the cord , YES

im so stumped.

Okay.....so you cleaned the piston with SeaFoam. Good!! I'm actually glad it worked for ya.
But where did the carbon go? Carbon just doesn't disappear?
Did it blow off the top of the piston while running @ 12,000 RPM?
Did it dissolve and drain into to the base through the transfers and now eating at the crank bearings?

No, he's against the use of Seafoam, starting fluid, and other products that have the potential to damage the equipment- damage that the consumer will want Stihl to cover under warranty. Warranty issues relating to these products happen every week, costing dealers and the manufacturer big bucks.
I agree with the use of Starting Fluid in a Gasoline engine as a bad idea .... its designed for Diesels

negative ghost rider , none of the above , what it did was dissolve and when I started it , produced HUGE amount of smoke out the muffler , which I would assume was the carbon getting the hell out of there.

Now .... had I used any of the formentioned sea foams listed above .... yea it might eat some seals up , but I used the correct bottle

I did Port it myself, I basically followed a thread by Blsnelling and replicated what he was posting and it worked, far from his standards I am sure. I think I more or less fluked it because it runs noticably stronger than it did prior to being ported. I left the base gasket out. I do not have a compression guage but I have a few saws and It definatly gained some compression from the reduced squish and altered timing(without getting into the whole timing issues with squish).
I am no porter and do not claim to be, but it went from a good work saw, to a bear like you suggested. I real fun runner.

Let's avoid the whole " does sea form work or not" debate. Love it or hate it who care...it won't help to OP at all.

Oh wait, it is the OP LOL...carry on.
I've seen the stuff around since the 80's and heard of guys swearing by it , I just never tried it until now. I was impressed how clean it got the cylinder. No it wasnt polished mirror shiny , but pretty darn clean

Are you drop starting the saw? I suspect that you're simply not pulling hard enough.
drop starting , putting on ground with foot in handle , it doesnt care , it will try with a mighty great force to remove your fingers from your hand once it decides to act up

Hey Adirondack look over there !! Holy cow its the most beautiful tree I've ever seen !! Go Climb it ....

; )
Now there is a great idea: Insult one of the guys on here who can help you if you actually end up with a broken saw. If you cannot get it started properly, you could try an MS-461 coil on it, as it has a retard curve for starting. Alternately, I could send mmy 12 year old daughter over to show you how to start it.

Not that this solves the issue at hand (and not that I'm telling you anything new), but adding an Elastostart handle to my 046 Mag was definitely a pleasant move. I rarely use the decomp. Every once in a while, it stuffs me, but that handle allows some buffer.

and then my 12 yr old daughter can show yours how to set a quarter on edge , on top of the saw , and walk away 40 yards , and knock the quarter off with her fancy little pellet gun that hurls lead at 1400 fps ; )

Adirondack hasnt offered any sort of ideas .... other than bash sea foam , which I could care less about

Forgot to mention, decomp it mandatory with my 460. its simply not pleasant without it.

I have a ported 046 without a decomp. It was a GTG winner. I have never put a compression tester on it but I would bet it's pushing 200psi (maybe Randy can comment). You have to be commited to start it; it is not for sissies.
