MS460 at the very least, while the MS660 would be best. The Husqvarna 390xp is also very nice due do its weight and power.

I was a timber faller for almost 30 years in the pacific northwest and can assure you that A good 044 with a 32 inch bar and sharp chisel bit chain should be plenty of saw for any oak on the planet.

The 660 is fun in big wood, but 24" oak isn't all that big. The 660 has a ton of grunt, and allows you the option to pull longer bars if need be.

My goto saw in that size wood is a ported 460. It is a bit lighter, a little easier on the gas, little easier on the body and pulls a 25-28" bar through oak and maple without blinking.

Now if you cut in the winter and crappy weather often the heated handles are great, I love mine when its 5* out.

Screw the heated handles, my soft azz is parked next to a nice warm fire when it's 5*F out! ;)

Why is the saw smoking in the cut? That doesn't sound right. Only times I have seen smoke either the oiler stopped working or the chain was dusted. Even cutting dry oak you shouldn't see smoke. There will be more dust with the chips, but no smoke.

The 660 is a fine saw, once you body gets used to the weight. I'm pretty strong but the 660 still found some new muscles.

Not the chain but the power head, it was overheating and the plug cap was burning and something else. I took it apart and cleaned it up and its been good.

I was told my saw was big enough for what i do BS!!! if it was then why does it start smoking when im cutting big oak?

I think you just incriminated yourself and answered your own question. No saw should ever smoke from heat. Sounds like your saw was packed full of crud and all the oil was burning. That's a good way to cause overheatig and seize a piston. It has nothing to do with performance or the lack there of.

With either a 460 or 660, order up a dual-port front muffler cover, and have the shop install & tune it when you take delivery. One could also open up the outlet hole in the rear muffler half (and open up the slot in the DP cover) but to get the saw into action, the DP cover should be fine.

As for routine maintenance? Mainly just keeping the air filter cleaned, and blowing the junk & funk from underneath the covers... some folks flip the bar over every couple sharpenings to equalize the wear on the chain grooves. If it'll be sitting awhile, drain the fuel, then fire it up & let it idle until it quits (a couple minutes) Maybe a spark plug & fuel filter once in awhile? That's about it.

Mix oil is a favorite topic :dizzy: My junk gets nothing but Stihl Ultra + high octane unleaded at 50:1. Other folks favor other potions. YMMV...

Have fun with your new saw... I'm hoping to join the big saw club shortly.

With that purchase, I'd hope he offers it as a freebie. And the required carb tune after the new cover is on. A dealership owes his customer base the same loyalty they wish in return.

Ya he said when i come in will make a deal, im good at that so ill get a discount or something for free. I better or ill go to the next dealer. If im spending that much i diserv something in return but they have been good in the past they found a part from a old simplicity mower for me, it took them 3 days looking threw the old magnifying computer on the old parts list and 10 phone calls.

Got teh new saw!

I got my new 660 today, dam that thing has balls. I got new chaps helmet oil wedges chains ext... it was a stock up run. And i did it under my 2k limit. i didn't buy 2 saws but i will get another sooner or later. I got 60$ off and a chain, 1000$ for the saw and 25" bar. I will be getting a 30+" bar in the spring time.

You Stud!

Good job Matt!

Congrats Matt! Hopefully the weather around here clears up for a week or two so you can get some seat time behind that baby!

Cut with my 660 for the first time today and it kicks a$$. Picked up the 361 and it felt like a toy.

He|| ya the 660 is beast, I have about 25 trees ready to be taken down, but i have power lines on one side! My wedges will have some fun!
Matt

660. no question. i personally have no need for the heated handles. as for wrap handles... if you are cutting from the clutch side, they are sweet. the ms 650 is cheaper and a half horse less, and when its time for a new top end for it, you can put a 660bb kit on it for big power for little dollars.
The 660 horsepower is 7 the 650 is 6.4 horsepower there is not much of a difference in horsepower but I could tell the difference between the two when cutting almost the same identical saws

Basically I was just letting you know you were totally right LOL
