Stihl or Hyway engine engine

Hi community. This is my post. I moved to the forest a few years ago, and have become more scheduled to using a chainsaw. I have an 029 that ran loan and burnt up, so the dealer tells me. I used to be a cat mechanic, do I can fix a lot of things. He's my 2 part question. Should I buy a new Hyway 039 motor, or a used but complete 029 motor? Cost is the same on both units. Guy says a tree had fallen on it, but it should still run fine.

OR

Should I hone my existing burnt cylinder, and but a new piston and rings and rebuild mine?

if all you curren cylinder needs is honed id do it if you have the tools and skills. Set it aside with a spare piston and rings that you can get at some point.

Any pictures of the cylinder or piston from the used saw your considering ? Maybe at the worst it can be honed too and then you have 2.

I don't know anything about aftermarket HyWay cylinder kits but i do know kevin wont warranty work on them so to me thats all i need to know about them.

First thing to do is establish why it ran lean or any repair may be rather short-lived.
Take the original cylinder off & post some pics... chances are reasonable it will clean up & you can get away with a piston & rings.
Chainsaw cylinders aren't honed as such, the Nicasil is too thin & hard so basically if the plating is damaged the cylinder is toast. If there is just aluminium transfer from the piston melting, that can be cleaned off with chemicals &/or sanding. A VERY light ball hone can then be done to help the new rings seat but I prefer to just run a course scotch pad on a mandrel around the cylinder.
OEM parts are pretty much always best. Meteor is generally regarded as the best aftermarket manufacturer of cylinders & pistons. Most everything else is a bit of a crapshoot.

Again, you are not HONING the cylinder, you are BREAKING THE GLAZE so the rings seat. No over sizing, just cleaning.
