synthetic oil question

you would be surprised how many dealers (both saw/cycle/farm and vehicle parts, car dealers etc) have battled to get the Magnusson Moss warranty act revoked..........i have also had dealers in Canada tell me it does'nt apply here in canada, thats the MM act is only for the USA..... they shut up after i threatened legal action.....

I'm think you might be surprised,,, thats been tried before,,,,,,, :newbie: but the type of oil is not going to cause a seizure,,, there will always be a contributing factor that most really sharp techs will figure out what happend...

You missed my hypothetical point .... neither oil is gonna lock up the saw.

It ain't like CSI ...... get it ....

I've run a bunch of tanks of synthetic now (2T) and I am really happy with how much less it stinks and smokes than standard Stihl dino.

I had heard that, but now that I've run it myself I wish I'd switched earlier. As much as I've run saws, I've never been crazy about the way they smoked and smelled. So with all this talk about increased protection with synthetic, I think the real reason to switch is in the exhaust.

It sounds like whoever told you that is getting mixed up with their recommendations ... they're talking about Mobil 1 synthetic oil in 4-STROKE AUTOMOTIVE engines when you're talking about synthetic oil in 2-STROKE EQUIPMENT ENGINES...

I had to borrow some gas for my 660 a few days ago (I HATE doing that!). Just a 1/2 tank... smoked like crazy (comparatively). I don't like dino after begin spoiled on synthetic mix.

I wish I would have given the last of my dino mix to Dad when he was here. I've still got a bottle and a half of dino oil that I really won't use unless I screw up and run out of M2T. Too stinky and smoky.

The fake stuff will spoil you. I can't go back.

Hey, 2000 posts, a milestone has been reached.

I bought some Castrol 2 stroke stuff from Wal-Mart. I can't find an image online, but its a white bottle with black images, and has images of a mower and a saw on it. Is this stuff ok to use in my 353? I can take a pic tonight if you guys don't know what one it is.

Ok I guess a picture is in order.

So what is the brand/pic of the stuff we should be using?

I just bought six bottles of the Stihl 2 stroke stuff, so I've got time to wait.

I don't know about that oil.

But I thought I'd share that I've been measuring oil now by weight instead of volume, and I find it very handy (I have a good scale already).

Figured out what oil weighs per oz and then I can easily use any container and any amount of oil. Can even easily determine by weight how much oil stayed in measuring container.

I estimate this way I am within +-3 percent which is satisfactory to me.

I just use a postage scale... works great..

Here's a question for all you measurers - is a fluid oz of oil the same as a fluid oz of water? So.. what is your measure from the kitchen calibrated in?

what weighs more: a pound of feathers or a pound of gold?

So put us out of our misery on this one. Other than surface tension kind of measuring issues, is there a difference between the two? I have an old ratio rite somewhere, and if I can find it I should compare with it's measurements.

At the heart of my own measurements, I used small measuring cups that I believe are originally designed for medicine. Looked up the known weight of water and things seemed to check out.

But the ounce thing always confused me. This kind of ounce, that kind of ounce.

What I can do is measure the whole contents of a pre packaged oil container and compare to what I am expecting. The scale thing is cool because I even know how much didn't pour of of the container.

An ounce is an ounce...it's a volume thing, not a weight, when talking about liquids.

One thing to keep in mind about oils too that I haven't heard talked about here is Injection oil. It should not be used as a pre-mix oil as the oil will form "dropletts" in the gas rather than mixing in it. This may mess up the ratio getting into your engine.

Yes, it's a VOLUME measurement, not WEIGHT.. so.... it shouldn't matter.. Nice of then to call it FLUID OUNCE!!

How about this then:

In the United States, the U.S. fluid ounce is a unit of liquid capacity, approximately 29.5735 milliliters.

In British imperial measure, the imperial fluid ounce is a unit of capacity, approximately 28.413 milliliters.

One U.S. fluid ounce is 1.041 imperial fluid ounces.

I just weight the prepackaged oil, and make mine the same. Dead easy, and real quick - just pour into the final package (used 1, 2 and 2.5 gal mix bottles) until the weight is correct. No second transfers.

the imperial gallon is also larger than the U.S. gallon, the Troy ounce is smaller than the metric ounce, the pound is heavier than the kg, and the metric tonne is heavier than the ton. As long as you are comparing apples to apples, you should be all set.
How many imperial oz's into an imperial gallon to get a 40:1 ratio?

Q: How much wood could a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
A:is that US, Metric or Imperial?
