And this is my tadpole pond. They get plenty of nutrition

Well, something got into the big pond again and a lot of the water sloshed out.
So, good time to do a reconstruction on it.

I've emptied it and started to dig out the center; plan on using the pool as a liner.
Think I'm going to lay cardboard down first, then a layer of straw, then the vinyl liner.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what the pond outer diameter should be though, any help would be appreciated.

The pool is 8' diameter, not counting the approximately 2' sides which will be be part of the overlap.
I want to have two levels in the pond, center about 3' deep, with a 1' deep, 1' wide ledge around that.
I'm going to make a double row rock border around it, with soil filled in center for plants.

It's going to be just like the other two I made, but with a deep part and a circling ledge.
The other two, I just dug the hole and put in the kiddie pool and built up the soil around it for the flower bed.

Here's what I've got so far.
Tomorrow, I'm going to start moving the rocks from the barn to the pond area. Carefully. I think that's how I ended up with a herniated disk.

The kiddie pool is just for the size of the center deep part, I'm not going to use that in this pond.

Coming along nicely.
I got most of the hole dug this morning, just needs a little fine-tuning on the outer edge of the shelf/slope.
I'm taking it slow since I'm still working it out in my mind how I want it to be.
That dirt is like concrete to dig through.

Arrrgh. Been raining all day - great for the 20 or so volunteer transplants I recently moved, but not good for working on the pond. :(
I had an idea to lash together a raft/platform using some of the cherry branches/stakes I salvaged and sisal twine.
Think I'll work on that. :)

"If you build it, they will come!"

Working on the new frog pond today... spread pea gravel between and behind the rock border to fill in the gaps and, hopefully, help prevent the soil from seeping into the pond.

Sprinkled red and common milkweed and cleome seeds all around, then covered with burlap.
Used sunset rock (a little bigger than the pea gravel) all around the rock edge of the burlap to help weight it down.
Placing round stepping stones at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock - after I placed the second stone is when I saw my new pond resident.

Next, I'm going to transplant some liriope, Jap iris, and day lilies around the outer edge of the burlap.

I might wait until after this predicted freeze passes to do that. Supposed to get back up in the 60s again by the weekend.

Oh, and going to clean up some of the water hyacinths and water lettuce and put back in the pond. It will die and rot over the winter and be a good bio-snack-base for the new tads next summer. :havingarest:

I need to build up the 12 o'clock area since more water is draining out than I intended. I had in mind for it to be a spill-over, but it's too low and needs to be adjusted.

VERY windy today and I try to never transplant on windy days so... while I was out shopping I decided to stop at the rock yard and have a look around.

85lbs of Colorado river rock @ $.45/lb.
No charge for the fieldstone scraps... and one still in the truck that probably weighs 50lbs, good for another step

I could have used more, but I couldn't justify spending that much money on rocks. :p
They sure had a lot of pretty rocks though.

Got mostly flat, round smooth rocks for the frogs to sit on. One big round pink/black/quarts stone I just couldn't resist.

Just finished up with the basics. I built up that one section of berm then decided I needed to continue on to the 3 o'clock position. Got my transplants planted: liriope, Stella D'oro lilies, Jap iris, and pink sorrel/oxalis.
Waiting to place the big river rocks until everything settles in.

Looks great, I'm happy with how it turned out.
All ready for next years tadpoles.
