Here is a reference to what I was talking about earlier. Thanks for the prompt, Ghillie; I didn't think to include a picture.

Please note the comment about the "direction" of rotations in the 2 half hitches. A cow hitch isn't made to hold well when only one end is pulled on. The two half hitches does hold well.

Thanks. I got the half hitches right on the white pine climb yesterday. But like I said once I felt the rope cling to the bark on the oak I just needed a knot to hold the rope to the tree. A figure 8 would have been a clincher.

I am going to start a thread on the subject of knots one uses to tie off for srt.

Wouldn't a figure 8 knot be easier than that?

Yup. A little and I used it all the time for a while. The funny thing was I had just watched Beranek's video and he warned that a knot has the possiblity of jamming the friction saver and not pulling it out so he suggested the brass snap or a threaded link like Ghillie uses. Being the bonehead I am I simply assumed Jerry was being overly cautious and an 8 would work just fine as it always had. My very next climb the knot jammed up in my friction saver and I couldn't pull it through, had to reset my line and climb again to go retrieve the works. Filed my snap down the next day.:)

Ya, I've had that happen too. I use a small biner now. But I go through the spliced eye. My other line isn't spliced so I just cross my fingers.

If you are talking about using a keychain biner, watch out for the biner clipping on to the big ring and jamming your retrieval up.

I was showing a new guy how to retrieve the friction saver with a keychain 'biner and had just said that my concern was it getting stuck when I heard the metallic *clip* and line was stuck. Had to come back with another rope the next day to get it out.

I'd pay $10.00 to watch that, LOL. Gotta admit, that would be funny if that wasn't you that did that.:)
